Transformers finalists for Toy Hall of Fame, do not make the cut

Transformers almost made it to the The National Toy Hall of Fame, according to this USA Today article.

The annual inductees are chosen on the advice of historians and educators following a process that begins with nominations from the public. To make the hall of fame, toys must have inspired creative play across generations. Historic and modern versions of the winners are displayed in the hall.

This year’s finalists were: the board games Risk and Clue, the Magic 8 Ball, Matchbox cars, My Little Pony, the paper airplane, PEZ candy dispenser, play food, sand, Transformers, the card game Uno and Wiffle ball.

Sadly, Optimus and Megatron lost out to paper airplanes, Clue and the Wiffle Ball.

Transformers: The Last Knight has lowest opening of series

By almost any measure, $69 million is a heck of a lot of money.

Not so for “Transformers: The Last Knight,” which is tracking to make that much in North America during its five-day opening frame. The problem isn’t just that it’s up against a $217 million production budget, although that’s part of it. With China powering an estimated $196.2 million international opening, Paramount and Hasbro are leaning on the film’s global appeal to justify its place in the series.

But the bigger red flag for “Transformers” No. 5 lies in the franchise’s history of opening at around $100 million domestically for the past three installments. This raises a lot of questions, all centering around who or what is to blame for “The Last Knight’s” lower numbers. Here are three reasons why the movie may have underperformed.

Interview with Anthony Hopkins

Anthony Hopkins, who will be appearing in the upcoming fifth Transformers live-action movie, had a few thoughts about a car chase scene in which he was involved.

“I had two American stunt drivers who were crazy,” he told Men’s Health magazine. “I had to sit in this kind of jet car. It was a low seat, hard to get into the damn thing. So they strap you in, you take a deep breath, here we go, and, ‘Action!’

“And then there are these helicopters flying low, which is scary, and you’re doing 80 miles through the Admiralty Arch (in London). Of course something could go wrong. You could get killed, I guess. But I come from the school of ‘just get on with it.'”

Optimus Prime series to spin out of “Revolution”

Beginning in November, Optimus Prime will headline his own series from IDW. Writer John Barber discusses the book.

Not to give anything away, but as Revolution starts, Optimus is in a fairly antagonistic relationship with … well, almost everybody. He’s come to Earth and said the whole planet is going to be part of Cybertron’s Council of World, without asking if the people of Earth wanted to be in it — or if the people of Cybertron wanted them. He’s doing this because he thinks he’s out of options to protect the Earth — he’s tried fighting evil Cybertronians, tried leaving the place alone. But bringing Earth into Cybertron’s fold is the only thing he hasn’t tried.

In Revolution this comes to a head: there’s a big, dangerous thing happening with Ore-13, which is a form of Energon that’s on Earth, and it looks to G.I. Joe like Optimus is behind it, so the threat becomes immediate. This isn’t a spoiler — Optimus is not behind the problem, and in the process of resolving the complex web ofRevolution, alliances are formed and new relationships are established.

So…Optimus still has the goal of bringing Earth into the cosmic community of Cybertron. But who’s with him and who’s against him have shifted a bit.
