All Hail Megatron Discussion thread

The modern comics universe has had such a different take on G1, one that's significantly represented by the Generations toys, so they share a forum. A modern take on a Real Cybertronian Hero. Currently starring Generations toys, IDW "The Transformers" comics, MTMTE, TF vs GI Joe, and Windblade. Oh wait, and now Skybound, wheee!

Caveat though:

IDW really played the asshole game with us on this one.

The compilation is, over-all, a better deal. It includes a text story, and several pages worth of annotations.

But, (and this is a big rancid butt of a but), the single issues have content (character profiles) that was not reprinted in the compilation. Those include character information that enhances the story. (Which Autobot is as much of a damned whack-job as which Decepticon? If you do not have the single issue, or simply do not bother to ask us, you will never know!)

There is a hardcover due ouut in January. I have no idea if it will have new content, let along what it would be.

See, I didn't feel screwed on LSoTW because I'd rather have the character profiles (like the old "Who's Who" in the UK issues) than some text story. If I want to read a TF text only story I can read any of the novels. Or the crap from the fan club.

Honestly, since I don't think *that* much of TF comics (or the current show) I just can't see a TF *text story* as any kind of purchase incentive. I know, pessimistic. I just don't trust them to be much cop, and haven't heard anything good about them. Gonna go out on a limb and assume they mostly focus on TF's sci-fi elements.

There's a difference, though, the text story in the Wreckers compilation is 'awesome,' and also changes the whole way you look at the story. And it's written by Roberts. None of those shitty novels or fan club crap is written by Roberts.

Seriously, it's way way underrated. I'm tempted to see if it's online anywhere to show you.

Yeah, but this is actually pretty good. It ain't a great story. It did not floor me. But, it was good, and easily better than most of the novels and all of the fan crap. (There are a few short stories from the "Legends" anthology that are better. But, even so, "Bullets" beats a few of the other stories in "Legends".)

I would rather have a good text story instead of middling (or lower) profiles.

Thundercracker's tech spec describes him as "unconvinced by the Decepticon cause". IDW made him MORE of a Decepticon than Megatron (am I the only one who saw parallels with Marvel's Ravage?), slapping a clichéd "samurai" personality onto a character voiced by John "Put a Little Bow on 'Im" Stephenson. Yyyyeah, precedent...
I can almost see what you are saying about Thundercracker being "more of a Decepticon". But, I think what McCarthy was going for was Thundercracker buying in to the party line because (as said in the original character profiles by Budiansky and Shooter) Thundercracker needed something to believe in despite his doubts. Megatron behaving in a way inconsistent with his spoken goals/ethics was too much for Thundercracker.

HONOURRRRR

Consume more Japanese fiction. Or better yet, American fiction "inspired" by Japanese fiction. Or just trust me. Thundercracker's personality is one of the most cliché in the whole story.

Pretty sure that honour is not exclusive to samurai. Just saying....

Certainly not, but considering the propensity of mainstream American fiction to crib wholesale from mainstream Japanese fiction... TEEN TITANS GO

Anyway, regardless of where it came from, the personality trait is a shallow and boring one, which- apparently only for me- comes off as laughable in Thundercracker.

For me, an ideal Thundercracker is one just as slow and brutish as his G1 cartoon depiction, but who, as in his tech spec, has an odd sense of arrogance tied into his flying ability, and doesn't really care about Decepticon ideals.
