Comics are Awesome II
Re: Comics are Awesome II
Forgot to post this yesterday:
New Avengers #18:
The cover bastardizes the title in to "The New Dark Avengers". The stucture and plot of the issue mirror (albeit with some decompression) "Dark Avengers" #1. Bendis writing Osborn makes this well worth picking up. Osborn is showing up in the main "Avengers" book as well, meaning that Bendis is likely making the next few months a defacto cross-over between his various titles. And, the Vision is back over in the main book, bringing the entire property one step closer to pre-Bendis spec. I am looking forward to the current arc, but am not likely to stick around much past it.
Grade: B/C

By 138 Scourge's request, moved from the All Hail Megatron thread...
You said Lee shouldn't have creative or editorial control. I'm merely pointing out that he and Johns have gotten positive results in their short time in charge of the company so far. Will those books be selling as well in a years time? That's impossible to say. But in the meantime, it's clear their decisions have benefited the company. So again I ask, why don't you think Lee should have creative or editorial control in DC Comics?Dominic wrote:That is not what I was talking about. And, even if it was, how many of those books are likely to be around in a year, or even selling as well at that point?
Have you even read any Green Lantern comics he wrote yourself? Seems to me you're letting your bias against Johns bringing back Hal (and Barry) make the decision rather than the story itself. If it read like fanfic, I doubt it'd be one of the top 10 best selling comics, which Green Lantern has consistently been since Johns took over and he's boosted the characters popularity beyond what it has ever been before. And, the rest of his GL run read like fanfic. (And, I would say that even if I did not prefer Hal crazy and/or dead.

Re: Comics are Awesome II
I think it was Dan Didio's decision to bring Barry Allen back, or possibly Grant Morrison's since he wrote Final Crisis. So we can't lay the blame for that at Johns' feet. But you're absolutely right that he's elevated Green Lantern to a level of popularity it's probably never seen, and written some great stories as well. I agree, it's not fanfic.Sparky Prime wrote:Have you even read any Green Lantern comics he wrote yourself? I want to say it was actually Johns' call actually. I am 90% sure it was him.
He and Morrison both have the clout to have made it happen, or veto it though.

I believe andersonh1 is correct actually. From what I've been able to find, Morrison wanted to use a Barry Allen in "Final Crisis", and apparently it was Didio that pushed him to make it the original Barry Allen.Dominic wrote:I want to say it was actually Johns' call actually. Re: Comics are Awesome II
From the AHM thread:
He writes bullshit *now.* He also wrote The Long Halloween, which is up there on my list of favourite Bat-stories and, let's face it, is basically the book The Dark Knight was based on. (At least as much as Begins was based on Year One.)138 Scourge wrote:You know something that amuses me to no end, though? The fact that you, Dom, and I all have dramatically different tastes in what makes a good-ass comic, but there's one thing we can all agree on. Jeph Loeb pretty much writes bullshit.
Re: Comics are Awesome II
Short answer: Lee can draw and illustrate well. His art is clean. But, he has no ideas to speak of beyond "lets make this kewl".
Wow, even a self-indulgent prick like Morrison wanted to leave *the* Barry Allen dead. That should be all the evidence we need to prove it was a bad idea to bring him back.Morrison wanted to use a Barry Allen in "Final Crisis", and apparently it was Didio that pushed him to make it the original Barry Allen.

Not having read anything he wrote I can't say that I really have any point of reference here. But running the ship is a whole different thing than what writing is. I think you're judging Lee on the wrong merits here Dom.Dominic wrote:Short answer: Lee can draw and illustrate well. His art is clean. But, he has no ideas to speak of beyond "lets make this kewl".
Re: Comics are Awesome II
He did a run of Superman not quite 10 years back, and I *think* Batman.
But, I was talking about his art in terms of what he designs as much as his writing. (He can draw with direction well enough. But, he should not necessarily have control.)

You know, I tried to read the Long Halloween back when it was coming out in single issues, and gave up about four or five issues in. Just couldn't get into it. Real pretty artwork, though.
