I've said the old cartoon was goofy, there is no denying that. My point is that I think Turtles Forever took it too far. And as evidence I pointed out a scene with something you wouldn't have seen in the original '88 cartoon. But here you are dismissing it simply because the show was goofy to begin with. I don't think it's me that isn't willing to entertain the possibility here...Gomess wrote:If Turtles Forever clashes with your memories of the old show, that's fine, but I'm just surprised you're not even willing to entertain the possibility you've got your rose-tinted specs on here.

Re: Comics are Awesome II
Today's comics: picked up Batman and Robin #1 and Captain America #3 from last week, and Aquaman #1 from this week. Avoid Catwoman #1 unless you like your comics to be softcore porn. How many times can she flash her boobs in a single issue? And have sex with Batman while both are in costume? So much for treating women as something other than sex objects, right?
Batman and Robin #1
I miss Tim Drake. I've read a few of the trades with Dick Grayson's Batman and Damien Wayne's Robin, and Damien's a little punk more often than not. He's not a bad character, just full of attitude as contrasted with Tim's solid level-headed version of Batman's sidekick. Now with Bruce Wayne back in the role, we've got a grim and attitude-filled Batman and the same with Robin, so it'll be interesting to see where this goes, if I keep buying the book.
There are two plots, one outside Gotham and one in. The one outside has to do with Batman Inc as a Russian ally of Batman is killed by some mysterious figure who decides that "the global circus act has to end". The plot within Gotham featuring Batman and Robin sees Bruce make a change as he decides to start memorializing his parents on their wedding anniversary rather than the day they died. Damien sees no value in that sentiment, and the two debate the issue which reveals differences in their outlook on life. And the obligatory action scenes show them stopping a robbery of some plutonium rods, which leads to Damien inadvertently causing the thieves to be killed. Bruce reads him the riot act, and so the tone is set for the series.
Aquaman #1
My favorite book of the week. Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis were a great team on any number of Green Lantern issues, so I'm glad to see them on this book, which like Batman #1 last week remembers that it's an introductory issue and spends a lot of time setting up the character. The attitude among some fans that Aquaman is lame is transferred to the characters within the book, and all sorts of notions about Aquaman are disabused. He easily stops a robbery by flipping a van, then shrugging off some gunfire at point blank range. He leaps great heights to get around quickly. He goes to a seafood restaurant to have some fish and chips, and tips the waitress with some gold doubloons to help get her kids through college. And of all the DC couples who are no longer married, he and Mera are the exception.
This is a fun book as one misconception about Aquaman after another is disabused. It's almost meta in the way it treats the subject. And as much as I liked Peter David's Aquaman, thank goodness the harpoon hand is gone and Arthur's back to his classic look, as he was in "Brightest Day". My favorite of the week.
Captain America #3
I'm still loving the art in this book. We get some more hints about the plan between Bravo and the new Hydra Queen (a group I'm unfamiliar with apart from the past few issues, so I'm having to brush up on Marvel villains). They use the Ameridroid to trap Captain America in the dreamworld that they've been trapped in for 65 years by using the old man who has access to get in and out of that dimension, something they were unable to do on their own. It's not quite clear why Bravo wants revenge on Captain America, other than because they both wanted Peggy Carter's affections during WW2 and Bravo lost out. And that may be the sole reason.
It's the middle chapter of a story, so things pretty much just go from point A to point B so we can pick it up next time. Still a good book though.

You, uh...you seen anything about Red Hood and the Outlaws? Poor Starfire...andersonh1 wrote:Today's comics: picked up Batman and Robin #1 and Captain America #3 from last week, and Aquaman #1 from this week. I don't even mind the cheesecakey stuff at all, but it's gotta be done well. Look at any of Alan Moore's "Cobweb" stories: Every damn one is just jam-packed with innuendo, and the main character is going around in a transparent costume. Yet, it manages to be fun and somewhat classy, even. And it managed to avoid some just straight-up superhero sex scenes, which has got to be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of in a mainstream big two book. "Yeah, we'll just have Batman and Catwoman straight-up bonin'". Dumb as hell.
My local comic shop's owner was trying to sell me on Aquaman pretty hard, because he remembered that I liked the David run on that book a lot back in the day. This guy's good. Not good enough to get me to buy it, but I was pretty impressed that he even remembered what I was reading back that far.
I was gonna try to be more positive and talk about comics I liked that I bought today, but I'm tired now. Probably gonna ramble on about more Spider-Island stuff tomorrow, because this story's just awesome. Spider-Herc! J. Jonah Jameson, the Spectacular Spider-Mayor! Venom (Flash Thompson) vs. Anti-Venom (Eddie Brock)! All kinds of cool stuff goes down.

And, we all saw that coming. I give the African Batman 2 years before he gets killed. The rest will be dead by the end of next spring.
Find out in the next issue of "Catwoman"!How many times can she flash her boobs in a single issue? And have sex with Batman while both are in costume?

Hey, DC! I'm a fan of eroticism! And Batman and Catwoman shagging in costume is juvenile and hilarious, not erotic!
...I mean, it's not like they're targeted at kids.
RIGHT? =|

At this point, honestly? I don't think they are. Not many of them, anyway.
I mean, how much of the comics market is even kid-accessible anymore?

Re: Comics are Awesome II
I am pretty sure that it makes more sense for erotica fans to buy *real* porn. Just sayin'....
As for the kid market, O6 posted a good article about that on FaceBook a few days back. DC made real inroads on the kid market in the previous decade, including getting little girls in to the hobby.
Little kids are gold. If you get them young, and you theoretically have life time fans. But, little girls? That is even better. A girl in a comic shop is a rare thing. We know this.
But, she might bring a few of the boys with her. (If nothing else, they will follow her in there.) And, if that little girl grows up to read comics that are not Vertigo or indy crap, well.... She is going to be helping to sell more comics than she is actually going to buy.
So, yeah, it makes perfect sense to publish comics that will offend kids and/or parents. Of course you want to publish comics that a reasonable person would be twitchy about letting their daughter read.
DC publishes junk aimed at really little kids and apparently hopes that those kids will just come back at some point after they are old enough to read mainline DC....because in a market dominated by Maxim (technically not porn) and other lad's mags, fans of erotica are going to look to comics for their fix.
Oh yeah, this makes perfect sense.
Dom
-seriously, how does it make sense?

Erotica =/= Pornography. That's like saying flirting = sex. Anyway...Dominic wrote:I am pretty sure that it makes more sense for erotica fans to buy *real* porn. Just sayin'....
I firmly believe that comic books are perhaps *the* most out-of-touch fictional medium. In existence.
