I'm not sure how a cartoon that *genuinely* used a WAH-WAH-WAHHH music sting almost every episode could ever be insulted by being made to look "too goofy".

I think we need to isolate specific examples of goofiness, and compare them as objectively as we can!

And, it is a light week that I would have missed if I did not have an errand in Boston this afternoon. Seriously, Newbury managed to not pull either of my books this week. (And, they did not order many of the "New Avengers" issue.....) And, I am increasingly less willing to go looking for my books elsewhere. If they fuck up with one of my anchor books, I am out.

In related news, "Demon Knights" was sold out, so there was no point in using this week as a pretext to drop a title and pick up that one instead.

Okay, comics...

New Avengers #16.1:
Bendis picks up where he left off before "Fear Itself". Osborne escapes prison with the help of his Goblin Cult. No real high concept beyond, "Osborn escapes". But, Bendis carries it off well, moving the pieces around while making it look like he is not just moving the pieces around. One of the better ".1" issues.
Grade: B

Ultimate Spiderman #2:
I remember a time when I wanted more comics to come out every 2 weeks. That time has passed. Seriously, I have one trip to the comic story a week that is more or less obligatory, if only because Newbury is (apparently) going to be unreliable about getting my damned comics...... This issue shows miles adjusting to his new power set as well as various other things in his life. Bendis talent with dialogue is on full display here, as he manages to make the kids read like kids and the adults sound like adults.

Anyhoo, I think my main disagreement with Sparky here is like... where do you draw the line for "goofy"? Leprechauns are really *too much*? Really?

It's not so much the leprechauns but living bowling balls? Or how about mutant food? Are any of those the types of villains that showed up in the original cartoon? No? Then why do they show up in Turtles Forever? And why is April reduced to a helpless damsel in distress? You can set your watch to it? That whole scene is just goofier than anything you'd actually see in the old cartoon.

Because she frequently was. Come on, watch one of the middle seasons all the way through. She's really not the fiercely independent and bright reporter people like to remember her as. As for mutant food, it could be a reference to the aforementioned pizza-spawned aliens, I guess. I'm just really not with you on "Leprechauns and Alice in Wonderland parodies and turning into babies and WAH-WAH-WAHHs and love potions are FINE, but food monsters?? That's just silly!" =|

Frequently isn't something you can "set your watch to". She wasn't always in trouble and didn't always need the Turtles to save her.

The pizza aliens looked sorta like the aliens from "Alien" though. Which, as a kid, I thought was scary. Honestly, I don't care if you're with me or not. Those aren't the types of villains that would have been in the original cartoon and had no place being in Turtles Forever. It was just over the top.

And I think you haven't watched enough of the old show recently to make a statement like that, but ok, you don't have to care about me! *sniff*

If Turtles Forever clashes with your memories of the old show, that's fine, but I'm just surprised you're not even willing to entertain the possibility you've got your rose-tinted specs on here.
