Remember that comic shop I mentioned that opened around here, and how I was hoping to start reading comics again?

Yeah, went to go buy some comics the other day and they up and closed house. For real! They just opened in November and the guy running it was really cool, too, damn it. There's no signs, or anything, the building's just empty (and one of the Marvel posters is still hanging up). Really sad.

People spend so much time worrying about whether a figure is "mint" or not that they never stop to consider other flavours.

The economy is still in the dumper unfortunately.

It was never a real plot point back in the day.
Oh Stan Lee, you talentless hack...

Mark Waid dredged it up as part of "Onslaught". Why the hell are they bringing it back now?

What are you talking about? Stan Lee didn't come up with that plot point.

Stan may have had some good ideas, but he's also the same guy that came up with Striperella. :p I guess a case could be made for stuff like this being retconned out of existence because the writers didn't quite have a firm grasp on all the characters yet. Much like how Raiden in Mortal Kombat 1 was a psycho that invites all the other gods to come play and destroy the Earth in his MK1 ending. But in every other MK he's this benevolent protector of Earth. If it weren't for the fact that someone came along and brought it back up again with the whole Onslaught thing.

I can see the TPB with the issue in it from where I'm sitting right now, but if memory serves then yeah, Stan got the writing credit on that one. Who do you think invented Chuck's secret love for Jean?

Could you be more specific? I've never seen anything Stan Lee wrote suggesting Xavier had a secret love for Jean. I've never even seen that plot point come up until he became Onslaught.

Issue 3, page 4, panel 6.
Stan Lee wrote:"Don't worry"! As though I could help worrying about the one I love! But I can never tell her! Not while I'm the leader of the X-Men, and confined to this wheelchair!
That single panel was the entire inspiration for that aspect of Onslaught. As far as I know (and I know X-Men) it was NEVER brought up again until then.

I don't have a scanner, but just Google it if you're curious. A bigger and more savvy comic fan than myself is bound to have written reams about it.

Of course, talking about plot danglers and retcons in X-Men is like talking about rain being wet.

I will say that Marvel, to their credit, did not redact those panels in reprints.

But, yeah, Lee owns it, even if Waid brought it back.

Brightest Day #21
With only 3 issues left of the series after this issue, things begin to look dark for Earth. It seems the Dark Avatar the White Lantern mentioned a few issues ago is on the rise. However, the primary focus of this issue is on Martian Manhunter as he continues the fight with D'Kay and ultimately has to decide the planet he calls home. I have to say I thought his story was the weakest story in Brightest Day, but I enjoyed how it played out in this issue. And now only 4 have yet to complete their missions from the White Lantern.

Green Lantern #63
This issue acts as the prologue for the War of the Green Lanterns, giving us a different version of Krona's history than we've previously been given, including who was really responsible for the Manhunters massacre of Sector 666. It's interesting to see Krona in this different light. Of course we're also seeing the War of the Green Lanterns begin as the Guardians distrust in Hal grows in this issue. Really interested to see where they take this story.

It took quite awhile to get back to J'Onn's story, but it was great to see him angry and cut loose and finish the threat of D'Kay decisively. And then turn right around and willingly give his life for Earth, all the while comforting Deadman. Great character issue for the Martian Manhunter.

Yeah, it's looking good. Krona's really being built up as the one responsible for so much that we've always assumed the Guardians did, or allowed to happen. It's a retcon, but one that works and works well, in my opinion.

So who's no longer going to be a Green Lantern? I can't see them ditching Hal again, or Kyle. Either John or Guy will end up with one of the other Corps... that's my guess.
