Comics are awesome.
Re: Comics are awesome.
This reminds me of how I describe Firefly to people who haven't seen it. "It's a western in space, which I know sounds ridiculous, but they pulled it off really well". Plus, the different properties aren't crossing over to each other. We're not getting an issue where Spock, Shockwave, Dr. Mindbender and Peter Venkman are all gonna be standing around trying to figure out how to cure space zombies. Each continuity will be self contained.
Re: Comics are awesome.
Here is the CBR article. Even Schmidt admits that the Joe book is going to be a train-wreck unto itself....except it won't be. But, it will be. Oh, "it will work".

I glanced over the IDW boards. There is barely any reaction from the Trekkies, which may well bode ill for the IDW Trek books as a whole. It might do to check more on dedicated Trek forums. The reaction from Joe fans is largely negative. There are few "this is good" responses, largely from people who seem to go out of there way to like crap.

Re: Comics are awesome.
The negativity towards this all seems so strange to me, I mean, what, the Joes can fight all sorts of Cobra-La monsters, but zombies is somehow pushing it too far? And as has been mentioned already, we already have TF zombies in the post movie Decepticons so that's not really any particular big deal. And Trekkies have the Borg which are basically cybernetic zombies so I don't see why they would be so pissy about it. This all just seems so odd. So we get a couple of "fight the zombie" issues. big deal. We'll be back to the regular stories soon enough.
Re: Comics are awesome.
Cobra-La is one of the worst received bits of Joe lore, ever. I say that without hyperbole. There are many fans who blame the initial downfall of the franchise on Cobra-La, and say 1986 was the last good year for Joe. (Obviously, the end of the Cold War and the consequent drop in the military's popularity had nothing at all to do with this.)
(Come to think of it, IDW Galvatron is not exactly loved either....)
The problem is that this is just idiotic. It is "Tard-fest zombie movie, but not with licensed characters". It pretty well delivers on the prejudice that all of the licensed properties are nothing but the lowest and most derivative content available. IDW is foisting its own, over the top idiotic, comic into 4 licenses in the hopes that it might lure somebody in to buying that book, even though that book cannot have too much linking it to the cross-over. Hell, IDW does not even get to keep the credible writers they have handling the main event book. (For the record, Abnett might be the most credible writer IDW has in its stable. Byrne is the only other contender for that title. Though Abnett is only in for this as far as I know.)
Setting this idiotic thing in context with the main books is a way to force readers to buy the damned thing. In other words, (as O6 alluded to above), putting IDW on the same page as the big 2 in terms of publishing needless and intrusive cross-overs.
This is the first time I have ever *hoped* for a TF book to fail. I have expected it plenty of times. But, never have I hoped for failure.

The IDW Trek boards are always dead. Almost no one posts there.Dominic wrote:I glanced over the IDW boards. Zombies doesn't necessarily equal suck. Blackest Night was actually pretty good and it was basically a cosmic space zombie cross over (albeit for DC, which barely qualifies as a cross over in my opinion). And Blackest Night was also very recent, so apparently the trend isn't over. That said, why shouldn't IDW try capitalize on what's currently popular. Done right, it could actually kick ass. For all we know this could wind up elimanating the cosmic jibberwank from Furman.

Re: Comics are awesome.
Not even when Furman was writing BW? I hoped to hell that those books would fail, and thankfully it appears that they did, because they stopped making them. (I'm actually starting to think that Dom's old theory that Furman was writing tons of hackeneyed crap simply to get dropped from doing the main TF books--and it appears that he succeeded, because not long after he moved to the Movie books while McCarthy took over for AHM.)Dominic wrote:This is the first time I have ever *hoped* for a TF book to fail. Jibberwank? Wait, it's pronounced with a J sound? I always assumed gibberwank, pronounced like...well, gibs. Or at least how I always assumed "gibs" was pronounced...the foundations of my world are shaking!Shockwave wrote:Zombies doesn't necessarily equal suck. Also, Dead Rising 2 just came out, and Red Dead Redemption has that whole Zombie DLC coming out, so this is a fucking huge thing in gaming right now. It's a wee bit overdone, too, if you ask me. (I think Modern Warfare 2 had some mode called 'Zombie Nazis' or something, too.)
Re: Comics are awesome.
Is it gibberwank? I must have misspelled it. My bad. Hm. Gibberwank vs. Jibberwank.
Re: Comics are awesome.
It is spelled with a "g", but pronounced with a "j". The the root is "gibberish".
I did not want the BW comics to fail so much as I wanted them to go away.
I do not think Furman had a master plan so much as he was simply being a lazy ass. His plan was to get paid to do as little as possible. But, if he lost work, he would not get paid as much.
When I say I want this to fail, I mean "I hope IDW loses money and readers over it". (See below for why.)
IDW has a damned zombie book, and it obviously is not capitalizing for them, which is why the are forcing an idiotic and intrusive cross-over on all their (presumably more marketable) licensed books. This is exactly the kind of idiotic stunting that damned near killed the industry in the 90s. For some reason, the small companies with the licensed books are more prone to it than the major companies. I have no idea why.
Either way, I hope there is some market based punishement for IDW that deters them from pulling this shit again. If it becomes the norm, I will just drop TF, rather than just read it between idiotic events.
