Fascinating. Can you imagine a 13 year old kid sending some drawings in to DC or Marvel these days and getting solicited for a job on the spot?Onslaught Six wrote:Interesting Jim Shooter interview(s):

Mostly there for TF. He makes it seem like the Denny O'Neil draft has literally nothing surviving; it might be that Jim Shooter in fact came up with some of the names (Optimus Prime, Ulchtar) instead of Denny. Also interesting to see just how much he did for Marvel's internal industry. It's weird seeing how the whole thing evolved into what we see as comics today; especially when we talk about the Big Two.
Comics are awesome.

Shooter was a huge force at Marvel in the 70s and 80s. He is also known for having a death touch, owing to many of his 90s ventures collapsing.

The way he makes it sound, it seems like people were set against him. Office politics. He sounds like he was really fighting for creator rights.
If he was that good. Or, well, it was a different world then--no internet or anything. The only way you *could* correspond was via mail or phone. Nobody could know how old you were.andersonh1 wrote:Fascinating. Can you imagine a 13 year old kid sending some drawings in to DC or Marvel these days and getting solicited for a job on the spot?

Yeah, I'm not really liking it either. Supposedly they're still going to make some changes to it, but I suspect that'll pretty much be what it looks like in the movie.BWprowl wrote:On the other hand...anyone see that costume? I'm not loving Bacon Lantern.

Re: Comics are awesome.
Now I've been inspired to go have a look at this movie suit. Hm.
I see what they're going for, sort of. They want a superhero suit to work better in the movie than straight-up spandex would. And since the costume's sort of a ring projection anyway, a CGI Lantern suit makes sense conceptually.
But that said...that is a really odd way of rendering that design. I can't tell from the one picture I'm seeing, is that in the green-and-black, or is it solid-colored?
Also: Bacon Lantern. That's a Corps I could get behind.

I admit, I used to be a big one for creator's rights. If nothing else, "work for hire" sounded a bit like "contract under duress". But, given how much damage creator's rights did in the 90s, and the amount of self-indulgence we see among creators (if only as an indirect result), I am wondering if it was such a good idea. The way he makes it sound, it seems like people were set against him. Issue 4 is listed as out tomorrow. I'm hoping there's a twist ending in the works.Dominic wrote:-actually read issues 1 to 3 of the "Ironhide" series last night.

Brightest Day #7
I hope Hawk and Deadman got to finish those cheeseburgers. Seriously. They probably weren't cheap.
Issue 7 is the big "revelations" issue. We finally get some answers about why the 12 were resurrected. And yet the answers aren't all very clear. Each has some future task to perform, and while some make sense, some don't. Completion of these tasks will result in permanent restoration to life. It's amusing that Professor Zoom has already done what he was supposed to do, namely to bring Barry Allen back, so he's told "Task Complete" by the white ring.
A few other interesting points come up in this issue.
- the white entity is dying. So the whole motivation behind its actions is to essentially find a replacement. I didn't know these entities could die, particularly the life entity, so this is certainly interesting if true.
- Boston Brand's job is to find the replacement. The entity refers to him as "the power ring", confirming that the entity is using him, and the whole "power ring and battery" is just for appearance. That was already apparent from the way it jerked him around for the first few issues, but it's confirmed here.
And future-Aqualad shows up in the crowd around the white lantern. I'm willing to bet he's Black Manta's son.

Just one this week,....
Darkstar and the Winter Guard #3:
And, the series ends. Aside from moving some pieces around, (and in at leat one case back to where it was), this series does little beyond set up for the possibility of either a sequel or an ongoing. Failing that, there is a good chance that some of the plot elements and characters will be picked up in one of Marvel's peripheral books, such as "Agents of Atlas". All told, this series was readable, though very forgettable. Grade: C

-can now start in on "The Heroic Age".
