New Drift TPB

The modern comics universe has had such a different take on G1, one that's significantly represented by the Generations toys, so they share a forum. A modern take on a Real Cybertronian Hero. Currently starring Generations toys, IDW "The Transformers" comics, MTMTE, TF vs GI Joe, and Windblade. Oh wait, and now Skybound, wheee!

Drift is a good character, contrary to many of the complaints.

You should also read "All Hail Megatron".

Again, sorry for slight derailment, but as an AHM fan, Dom, what do you think of Megs' hair?

*Shall check out Drift, but is really waiting for an entire SERIES of original TF characters, like the 80s animes*

That was Megatron Origin, an entirely different, crappy series. All Hail Megs is the recent awesome one, which introduced Drift.

One of the issues in Megatron Origin had Megs kill somebody (probably Cy-Kill) in the gladiator games and then pull off his helmet to have a bunch of panels fold out. Like he had badass gladiator robot hair or something. It was awful and should be forgotten. G's confusing Megs Origin with AHM.

O, sorry gaiz!

*Hasn't read any of IDW's stuff set on Cybertron, 'cos pre-Earth stuff generally bores him senseless*

"ROBOTS IN DISGUIIIISE... on a planet of transforming robots?" >_> Yeah, I know; it's just a show, I should really just relax. ;]

Just because I don't wanna dip my toe into the Walky, sorry, the Wiki, can someone tell me what Drift turns into? A little car, right?

All Hail Megs is not set on Cybertron. Well, alright, the Autobot portions are, but only because Megs hurls them through the space bridge to get there. And then he spends like six issues destroying cities. It's awesome. (And I don't care how juvenile that makes me sound, that's part of why I love AHM.)

The toy does, and there's a design drawn up, but Drift doesn't actually have an Earth mode in the comics yet. So right now he's a big ol' Cybertronian hovercar thing. Like...Blurr.

EDIT: Here's the relevant Megatron Origin page on the Wiki (which is a great resource, damn its Wiigiiness to Hell):

I don't mind Drift, though you'll never hear me say that on the Allspark. I'd likely get mobbed by that angry crowd! LoL! One of the big complaints I've heard about him is that he hasn't done anything and yet he's supposed to be uber cool. I can kind of see why not much has been done with him yet. I chalk it up to the writers being a little wary about introducing their character into an established universe and making him acceptable. They don't want to ram him down our throats with all his awesomeness and have him trash everything and win all the big fights. So he doesn't do too much.
But then he has a spotlight issue, which I liked, and people get mad that this brand new character that no one knows about or cares about is getting a full issue to himself while other established guys get nothing. And now he's getting his own mini-series. So now it really kind of is feeling like Drift overload, but if you just look at the comics he really hasn't been that overwhelming shoved into the scene. Maybe it's that everyone is following the IDW boards and reading all these comments and interviews with McCarthy going on how frickin' sweet and cool Drift is. Maybe that guy's insistence that Drift is the next Wolverine is the source of all the hate and the feeling that at least McCarthy is trying to shove Drift down everyone's throats.

It also has to do with the fact that he comes across as a Marty Stu. He's a bad guy that's gone over to the good guys. He found a mysterious 3rd faction of TFs that left the homeworld. He carries around a couple swords. It all smacks of a cliche'd fan character. We've all seen this particular type of character a million times in fanfic. Despite all that though, I don't personally think he's *that* bad. He may have started life as a bad Marty Stu, but maybe they'll develop him into more than that.

I think it's the hype over the character more than anything that's made some fans hate him. I missed the hype, and just judging the character as he appears on the page, I like him. I like the concept of a former Decepticon who has repented of what he's done wrong and is now intent on saving lives. And he's not dark and angsty, he's calm and laid-back and polite and reserved. In some ways, he's a glimpse of how a future after the war could look, if some of the Decepticons could put their violent ways behind them.

I don't quite rate Drift as a fan character... he's not quite all powerful, all knowing and an unbeatable fighter, so he's not one of these overinflated fan-created uber-characters that show up out of nowhere and are bigger and better than long established Transformers. Drift is a talented and competent fighter, but then so are many of the other Autobots. I don't see that his little beheading trick with the insecticon (to pick one example) is any more 'kewl' than Jazz taking out Springer and pointing his gun at Kup's head.

I think the fans who hate the character have greatly exaggerated his bad points.
