HFTD Review thread

Money, violence, sex, computer graphics, scatalogical humor, racism, robots designed to be rednecks but given European accents, and maybe another sequel to the saga... what's not to love? TF m1, Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon and now Age of Extinction.

HFTD Review thread

Post by Shockwave »

Figured we could have a central thread for this rather than peppering the forums with individual review threads.

Anyway, my first offering is Sunspot.

Bot mode: This is how he's packaged so that's what I'll start with. The first thing I like about this figure is the head. He's got a lot of sculpting on it and yet only one eye. That's pretty cool and the color on it really brings out the detail. The wings hang on the back of the shoulders so they can be posed in either a wings up or down position. The rear engines are the upper legs and the legs are a little awkward, but they still have a decent range of movement and the figure does stand solidly on it's own. I don't particularly like how the feet are spring loaded to fold up automatically but again, the figure stands well on it's own so it's not a major enough issue for me not to recommend it.

Transform! The forward arms become the rear of the jet and the upper legs form the engines. There are two things on the underside of the forearms that puzzle piece into the wings to complete them. It's a little partsformerish, but I don't mind it on account that everything has somewhere to go in both forms. The chest flips up to form the front of the jet leaving the top of the head as part of a central engine. Wings lock into place after moving the arms back.

Jet mode: The jet mode is something like a stealth bomber the B2, but with a few key differences, there's no zigzag at the back of the jet like on the actual B2. The wings are more like solid single wings. The jet is mostly white with yellow trim and I like how the yellow seems to outline the jet. The underside has the standard "robot kibble under the jet" thing happening so.... yeah, best viewed from above.

Overall, I'm very happy with this figure as I have been with most of the non screen scout figures. I'm given to understand that Sunspot is a repaint and might track down the original version. I definately recommend him.

And to keep it going..

Victory of the Fallen 5pack: I don't really know why this is called that since the Fallen died like a bitch. But anyway, it's a 5 pack of Legends size figures. I'm generally surprised by the Legends line, managing to accurately represent the character, but not skimp on complexity for the size.

Prime: The figure obviously takes some liberties with the bot mode in favor of the alt mode. It looks a little more G1 than the movie model, but that doesn't bother me and at this scale I'm surprised that the lack of similarity isn't worse. Transformation is fairly simple.

Jetfire: If Prime's transform is simple, this one is even more so. The only thing I don't care for on this version is the use of light blue for the robot kibble, especially on the upper legs since they become the tips of the jet engines and it really distracts from the rest of the alt mode. This figure "combines" with Prime by just plugging him into Prime's back. Amuzing side effect is that this works in their alt modes as well.

Megatron: And I'm at work and it's busy so I'll have to continue this one later.

Those blade bits that clip onto Sunspot's arms are his axes. They can also peg into his hands so he can hold them more regularly.

Skystalker, the original version of the mold, is definitely worth tracking down. He's got a nice, darker color scheme that makes him look good alongside his buddy Mindwipe. I've got them both, this is one of my favorite basics ever.
