Thinking about selling some of my collection

It's just gathering dust, I'm not enjoying it the way I hoped I would. So I'm thinking about thinning out half of my collection from '97 to now, keeping only the ones I really want. But I'm not yet sure, so I'm still weighing the options. Anyway, was wondering if there was any good advice around here about this.

If you decide to do it, make a list of what you want to sell and then stick with it. Every time I start selling some off, I think "well, I kinda like that one... maybe I'll just keep it." And then I end up only selling one or two figures and I'm left with the same problem. Of course, I'm already so selective about which figures I buy that it's somewhat understandable. If I collected most of any given line, it would be easy to weed out the less-favorite figures. You might not have that same problem.

Since my "collection" (read: pile) is fairly diverse, I don't think I'll have that problem, but it's entirely possible, I do get sentimental. :p I'm looking right now at Classics Grimlock, and 70% of me says "sell him!" while 30% says "no, keep him, what's $10 and a waste of time shipping him going to get you?"

I was in a similar fix, JT. I was looking at all of my stuff and thinking "I could use a little extra cash, and I just don't know if I want all of this anymore." So I've sold a buttload of stuff of late. To be honest, I think I've sold more Transformers than I've bought this year. So here's how I've decided who gets cut from the team.

1.) Have I touched this thing in the last couple years? I had an easier shorthand for this, back in 2006 I packed up the whole collection and moved. I've moved three times since then, and in all that time, some of those guys never got unpacked. They're out.

2.) Do I have this mold in more than one colorscheme? If so, and if it's not a case where it's two different characters (like the Seekers or like that) then the one I like the least is outta here.

3.) How much do I really like this thing, anyway? Like, Classics Onslaught. Pretty good toy and all, but I never really thought it was that rad. Classics Megatron, kind of fun, but I was bored with the look of the thing. Pretty much any toy of a character that had appeared in the Bay movies, wwwaaayyy tired of those guys. Actually, I think all my movie 1 toys are gone except for Dreadwing. Classics Magnus? Yeah, he was pretty cool, but fifty bucks was cooler.

So that's how I've done it. It's worked so far, I've cleared a lot of space, made a little cash, and still have enough toys around that I don't feel like I'm missing anything.

Thanks for the suggestions, that's a lot of good thinking.

The idea of getting $50 for Classics Magnus is nuts.

The only toys I could personally sell would be the Bay-movie toys, and nobody probably wants those anyway. I'm so disappointed in most of those toys after a year or 3.

The obvious choice is to ask around here first. Some of us may want that stuff, after all. :P

Yes, that's part of why I asked the question here. I know enough about ebay through a friend of mine who makes his living on it to just sell 'em, but I figure if I decide to sell, I'd rather it be to you guys if you want it. That said, I want some cash, foo's! ;)

I think I'd be selling something from almost every line between BW and now. But thankfully, I recognized the movie lines early on for being a sham and held back to only get stuff I thought I'd like, so I have less there to sell.

Depends on why you're selling them. If it's just thinning the herd and you don't really need the scratch, then I think Scourge's approach is the best. When I've sold parts of my collection it's always because I need money. I then look at my toy shelf seeing Bob Barker's head price taggin everything in which case the most valuable stuff goes first.

Having said that, I'd be in the market for some Classics, particularly Magnus and Hot Rod. And others.

Dig out your RID and let me know what you've got. That's a line that's small enough that I could actually complete the motherfucker.
