2008: Transformers loses the oscar for best special effects to some decidedly fake looking CGI polar bears.

2010: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen isn't even nominated for the special effects category.

I would be shaking my fist and demanding to know what the deal is, but it's always the same with the Oscars; they hate to recognize movies that are critically low-brow, mindless romps. Yes, ROTF was crude and crazy and full of action and has been nominated for the Razzie award for worst picture of the year. However, despite all that, the special effects are by far one of the best spectacles to grace the silver screen this last summer. To not even nominate it?

I'm only following this crap tangentially, but from what I've gathered District 9 also wasn't nominated? What the hell if true.

And while we're at it, just how the hell did Lady GaGa get passed over for the Grammy? Were they just trying to Kanye-proof the whole thing?

Maybe Michael Bay'll show up at the Oscars and be like "Star Trek, I'm real happy for you, and I'ma let you finish, but..."

What did get nominated? I'm assuming Star Trek, and...what, Watchmen, for Dr. Manhattan's dong?

I am hardly a music fan, but the fact that pop-music's Grant Morrison lost can only bring me some comfort.


I am betting that the (common) complaint about Bay movies being hard to follow visually did not help RotF. One of the few things I like about the TF movies is the fact that the character designs are really purty. But, they are very hard to see in the movie, especially with Bay's quick-cut editing style.

One could also argue that the movie was bad enough in other respects to bar it from consideration altogether.

The 3 films nominated in the visual effects category are Avatar, Star Trek and District 9, so yeah, it was.

I really don't see why RotF didn't make it to the nominations here though. They had some great visual effects (and I personally I felt the first film should have won against "The Golden Compass"). But I see the RotF was nominated for Sound Mixing, so it still has some presence at the Oscars at least.

But anyway, I think Avatar will be the big Oscar winner this year.

Avatar deserves to take the win, but I'd call District 9 a close second. Does surprise me that Trek got the third instead of ROTF, since effects is pretty much the only thing ROTF has going for it at all.

I don't know if it got nominated, but "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" deserves a pile of awards. Do they have one for "Most Flat-Out Crazy Awesome Things Seen On-Screen?"

Dances with Wolves IN SPAAAAACCCEEE! might have something going for it, effects-wise. I'm not really interested, myself.

Thin comfort indeed, because while she lost "Song of the Year", she did pick up a couple Grammys in other categories. So yay for her.

Just puttin' this out there: Avatar does not in any way deserve the Oscar for Best Picture. For Special Effects and maybe Director, yes, but definitely not Best Picture.

I will lose just a little more faith in humanity if 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' doesn't get Best Animated.

Isn't it up against the likes of Coraline and Up? I saw neither but /co/ pretty much creamed their shit for Up.
