-TF "Defiance" #2.

-Squadron Supreme (4th printing, no ashes in ink) Possibly the greatest comic of all time.

-misc. "Final Crisis" comics for a project. (It was gratifying chopping up issue 7 like I did.)

Went to a hip-hop show last night. Was Mainly there to see Del the Funky Homosapien, but they also had these Kung-Fu Vampire guys, plus a bunch of local 'talent', including the cousin of a co-worker, who was the reason I was able to get a ticket for only $20. It was all really good, even some of the local guys, including the aforementioned cousin, were really cool. Kung-Fu Vampire was a surprise treat, I went and bought their CD after their set, mainly based on the fact that they had a goddamn cello player contributing to their baseline. Pretty cool stuff. Also caught a coupla shirts from the local guys, including one that just has some cool street art on it, so at least I won't look like a tool wearing that one. And Del himself was amazing, and well worth the wait through the previous artists. Much my delight, he played 'If You Must', plus everyone went crazy and sang along when he did 'Dr. Bombay'. Good to hear 'Mistadobalina' too, plus a track off his forthcoming new CD. Damn but it was awesome. Also, I bought a Heiro Imperium shirt while I was there, since I knew I had to have one as soon as they brought them out. Oh yeah, and a Del mixtape CD. Oh yes, I should go to these things more often.

Also, I did go to a midnight showing of Watchmen on Thursday night, and it was pretty much everything I expected of it. They cut out about what I figured they would (No Black Freighter, boo), and changed a couple of details (Mainly to streamline the endgame a bit, and I'll discuss those changes with anyone that wants to). But if you like the comic, you'll probably like this movie. The first third of it is almost the first part of the comic, panel-for-panel. There is that feeling that about halfway through, Snyder realized that a four-hour movie wasn't going to fly, so he started streamlining things, but for the most part it works. Roschach and Comedian are both great, which is what I mainly wanted. And Dan does have his gut, even if it's not very visible when he's in costume. Really liked the soundtrack, My Chemical Romance aside.

I saw it with a bunch of friends, and one of them was completely enamored with "The shorty with the hat".

Went to the independent press expo (STAPLE) here in town. Got a sketchbook from Matt Frank, who worked on the Rise of Safeguard comic. He did a sketch of animated Starscream in the front and was VERY excited that I asked him for a transformers sketch, apparently no one had asked him for one of those yet. He recited lines from the movie the entire time he was sketching, voices and everything. I will scan the sketch later, it's pretty sweet.

Also, saw Watchmen. Where are we fighting about that on these boards? I'm ready to jump in

- SWTF AT-TE/Captain Rex: Underarticulated but very cool vehicle mode with nice detailing, really suffers from the lack of pilots as there's a functional gunner's seat in the turret. The many small turrets help make up for the very static front and back pairs of legs. Middle pair have more articulation, and there's a neat hinge joint in the middle, so all is not lost. Transformation is too simple, and the robot mode's a mite unstable with small feet and a backpack that doesn't lock. Backpack can be at least partially fixed with a simple mod, and the sculpting's good here too. Plus, he's bulky and solid-looking, and reasonably articulated too. Needs more paint apps, I shall have to throw in a wash and some panel lines. Not the line's strongest figure, but definitely up there with the better ones.

Also, saw Watchmen. Twice. Heh. I hearted it. Perfect, no, but pretty damned good.

I finished my Classics Tigertrack and Spinout, at least as far as swapping parts is concerned. Ye gods those legs were a bitch. Still want to paint Spinout's ears, plus add symbols to the fronts of them, along with vanity plates. But otherwise they came out pretty good. I like Tigertrack best, the hood-chest configuration looks pretty good in yellow.

Black Freighter is coming along as an animated tie-in DVD along with the Under The Hood documentary on, I believe, the 24th, and allegedly it'll be in the Super Mega Director's Cut Edition on the movie DVD.

Dear God, yes. The movie was great up until that exact point.
I saw it with a bunch of friends, and one of them was completely enamored with "The shorty with the hat".
What, Crazy Mask Guy, as he was called by my friend?

Spinout's ears should be yellow, even if he's red. Go look at the Diaclone version, and it's that.

People spend so much time worrying about whether a figure is "mint" or not that they never stop to consider other flavours.

Yeah, I did read about that. Made me pretty happy. It'll be interesting to see how they interperse it in the Director's Cut.

Indeed. It's good to see Rorschach's universal appeal survived the transition to film.

Oh I already knew, but I decided that I wanted to paint the ears anyway. Accurate or no, it'll look better, and help to make him look less like Sunstreaker's Head On a New Body.

Animated Waspinator- Just went ahead and got him, quit putting it off. He's pretty much what I expected, which is to say...not much. This toy has underwhelmed me since the first pictures, and the toy itself does nothing to mitigate it. Wasp mode is a sad, droopy-looking mess, with legs that have no chance of getting into a decent position. Transformation is barely there. Stand up and flip the wasp mask down. That's basically it. Robot mode's a bit better, as he's got a fair bit of personality; I do rather like the little extra arms. A weapon of some sort would be nice, as would some paint applications or something on his dark green parts, they look horribly bland as-is. At least you can flap the wings really fast, which is honestly pretty fun, though I wish they went further. Meh, it's certainly not the worst toy I've bought in a while, just really, REALLY underwhelming. Could've been a lot better. Here's to hoping we'll get an Activators Wasp somewhere down the line...

In way happier toy news, I also picked up that bitchin' GI Joe Resolute five-pack. Y'know, the one with the red Cobra Commander, Trooper, Officer, B.A.T., and Duke with the awesome wing pack? Oh cheezus it's an awesome set. Might be the best Cobra Commander ever. I don't care that his capey bits restrict his posability, he looks sweet. The new Trooper mold is really cool too, and has the most range of elbow motion I've seen on a 25A-style mold to date. I'm also overjoyed to finally own a B.A.T., expecially one in such a kickass color scheme. A pity his arm attachments are finicky about witch arm they'll peg onto firmly. Duke is surprisingly cool too. The wing pack is geared to open both sides at once, which is really nice. Be sure to twist his belt-pack around to the front before trying to attach the wing pack, or you'll have a bitch of a time getting it to stay. I also like how, despite this being a multi-pack, they did not skimp on the weapons. Two Broomhandles plus a sword for Commander, a pair of SMGs and Assault Rifle/Shotgun things between the Trooper and the Officer, plus a big missle-firing gun emplacement, all the B.A.T.'s hand attachments, and a pistol, rifle, and knife for Duke. There's plenty of weapon-switching joy to be had with this set. Plus, as mentioned before, they all look totally kickass. If you see this set, buy it. Hell, you might even consider buying two, as more of this awesome Trooper mold could only be a good thing.
