25th Annversary Prime Spotted

Post by Prime_Wreck »

While I was in wal Mart last night I saw they had the 25th ann. Prime for 70 bucks. I was really unimpressed by the figure itself. It was suppose to be a remake for collectors, not little kids, yet they butchered the smokestacks and the trailer is really dull looking. Sure the belt buckle with Cullen's voice is kinda neat, and you get a comic and DVD with it, but overall, not sure I'm willing to put up that much money for something it doesn't seem like they put alot of effort into the actual figure.

I saw the figure today at Wal-Mart on Woodruff Road in Greenville, SC. It wasn't on the shelf with the other Transformers, oddly. It's a nice looking set, and I like the voicebox, and I especially like the tampographed Autobot symbols on the shoulders since the stickers on my original Prime kept peeling due to the "rivets" in the shoulders. But the pricetag is certainly very steep, and I think I'll be waiting to see if this goes on sale before ponying up for it. I'd love a shiny new G1 Prime, even if it does have the short smokestacks. My original from childhood can't even hold his arms upright any more, the ratchets are so worn out.

My biggest complaint is the smokestacks. This was suppose to be a recreation of the original Prime for the anniversary, and it seems like a let down that they went with the shorter stacks. I mean, how many parents does Hasbro think are gonna be picking this up for their kids. Not many at that price.

I'm not fond of the blue shade they used, it's more G2 than G1.

The smokestacks are a safety thing, there's nothing Hasbro can do. I've heard it suggested numerous times before, "Just slap 'Adult Collectible' on the box and it'll be fine!" but clearly if Hasbro wanted to do that, they 'would.'

What's your complaint about the trailer, though? It's exactly the same as every other G1 Prime trailer ever. Well, that's a lie, because there's actually tons of variant Prime trailers over time, but it's functionally the same, at least.

Now I havn't had my original for some time, but I do remeber the trailer wasn't just a dull grey. I'll amend what I said about it, by saying the dull color is what I dislike and not what it does.

Yeah, you're right. It looks like this Prime was specifically tailored to giving a cartoon-esque appearance, sorta like how some of the GI Joe and Star Wars comic packs deliberately colour guys in the weird colours they were printed in the comic with.

Yeah, the colors are slightly altered, I guess for the more cartoon-ish look. But at any rate, the figure (of which I already own the superior New Years version), the comic (which I already own the original copy of) and the DVD (which I own as part of the Season 1 boxset) don't add up to even half of the ridiculously high sticker price. They need to do a wider range of reissues at a lower price point, forget the extras, and crank them out in time for the sequel. Just my opinion...

Having bought several reissues when they were doing them, I have one thing to say: Screw them, bring us more new moulds. It's great that I own a pristine Bluestreak and Jazz and Ricochet and Sideswipe, but what it comes down to is that they're just not that great at being Robot Toys. Sure, they look cool, but that's 'it.'

Meanwhile we have the new-mould toys like Sunstreaker/Sideswipe and Prowl and they're just 'kickass.' I want Wheeljack and...muh, actually, just Wheeljack. Jazz would be fun but semi-repetitive. Throw me Wheeljack. Ooh, and Tracks! Yes, we got Alts of both of them, and Tracks' was actually good...but Alts are huge.

I'll be the first to admit that the new molds are far superior in any number of ways to the originals. For example, Universe Silverstreak is in many ways better than G1 Bluestreak when it comes to durability, engineering and articulation. But nothing's ever going to displace the original as one of my sentimental favorites.

I love seeing G1 Prime on store shelves again, and only the price is preventing me from buying it at this point.

G1 Prime is probably the exception to the rule, though, because he's just so damned iconic and representative.

I've long been searching for a complete set of Prime accessories. I need it all--fists, gun, gas pump, Roller, so forth. Mostly the fists though.

And why the hell haven't they used the non-ridge fists and just make the damn gun handle longer? Or better, just modify the damn thing so he can hold it by the 'real' handle?
