I'm sure! And it looks like there are a good 10 or 15 issues in this compilation before I get to OMD, so there may be some good reading. Looks like Peter beats up the Kingpin pretty easily at one point, which should be fun. I promise, I won't judge all Marvel output by that one story. :)

If by awesome you mean awesomely terrible...
138 Scourge wrote: But this is just dumb. It's like someone trying to write superheroes like a grown-up by filling the "story" with characters being violently murdered every few panels.

So yeah, I'd probably pass on Ultimatum if I were you.
Yeah, the whole "story" is practically nothing but shock value deaths. It's really not worth reading.
And anderson: As far as OMD goes, I can understand the morbid curiosity of reading the most-hated Spider-Man story ever, but I feel like I should point out that not all Marvel's books are that bad. Just like not all DC books are as bad as JMS's runs on Wonder Woman or Superman. Screw it, let's get JMS and Leifeld on a book together, just to see what comes of it.
I don't hold JMS accountable for OMD personally. That story really was Joe Quesada's, to the point JMS even asked for his name to be taken off the book.

Yeah, as bad as JMS's run was, OMD was not his fault.

Anybody who wants a good Marvel run should read Bendis' "Dark Avengers" and "The Seige". If you do not read them, you are a fool.

Dom
-read "Countdown", and thus feels obligated to read "Ultimatum".

Ultimiate Fallout #5:
I had to pull this one from the shelf because Newbuty did not pull it for me. This actually made sense owing to the fact that the creative team on the book has apparently changed. Bendis is out, and Hickman is in. I decided to pick this issue up despite its lack of Bendis. That was a mistake.

The story itself has shifted away from characters reacting directly to Spider Man's death and more to general goings on in the "Ultimate" setting. This is a dishonest, but hardly unusual, trick. What really upsets me is that the new focus includes.....Quicksilver and the Scarlett Witch. And, yes, that means the return of one fo the more controversial, (and pointlessly grotesque), "Ultimate" angles.

Yup. In case anybody was thinking that capes and tights books have been incest-free for too long, worry no longer. This issue features Quicksilver having sexual thoughts about his dead sister, complete with explicity references to their sibling-hood.

Well, I cannot unread those pages, so I may as well analyze them.

Marvel had a hype event that was likely to draw in new readers. Said event relates to Spider Man, which means that some of these potential new readers may be coming in from outside the hobby. They might even be kids. Then 2/3 of the way through a series that could be used as a jumping on point, Marvel throws in some incest.

Imagine being a new reader. Now, imagine that after 4 issues of characters reacting to Parker's death, the focus and tone of the series abrubtly shift to....incest. Parents may be a bit twitchy about Quicksilver being in bed with a scantly clad woman. Most people would probably be a bit offended by incest. Marvel could not even hope for new readers being unfamiliar with the characters, (and thus missing the incest), because the Scarlett Witch calls Quicksilver "brother".

What a fantastic introduction to comics, or even just "Ultimates" this issue is. No, really Marvel. Pure fucking genius. Inspired.

Hey if she was good enough for someone else's family...

What? Ok, I'll confess when I first read Ultimates vol 1 I did find that... unusual.

Anyway.... comics!

Transformers #23: To be reviewed in the proper thread.

And on O6's recommendation:

Mega-Man #3 and 4. So far I like this series. The artwork is reminiscent enough of the video game without directly copying the screen images that it really works to understand how a 2D platform could be put in a 3D world like in a comic and still have it work realistically. I like the story, but so far it's just following the first game which I liked anyway so I guess that's not saying much. At least it doesn't feel like watching someone play a video game and it doesn't feel forced or retconned. Overall, I'd recommend it. It's fun and is a good translation from one medium to another.

There's also tons of little fan stuff they're throwing in that's just awesome. In Issue 3, when Dr. Light is having that heart-to-heart with Mega Man? Those are all the lyrics from the chorus of The Megas' The Message From Dr. Light.

According to cover solicitations, the next arc actually isn't going to be Mega Man 2--it's going to involve Time Man and Oil Man from the Mega Man Powered Up remake of MM1. It's supposed to be four issues long so unless they pull some stuff from the Game Boy games, this probably means we're going to get a lot of characterisation for those two, and probably the first six Robot Masters too (being that they're alive and well).

What's this cool, new Mega Man comic y'all are talkin' about?

Also, has anyone ever read George Perez's run on Wonder Woman? I'm really curious about it.

It's the cool new Mega Man comic. Archie's doing it. I think the guy writing it used to write (or is writing?) Sonic The Hedgehog, which has a reputation for either being awesome or fucking terrible depending on who you ask.

Cool. Is it good, and could I still get all the back issues?

I LOVE me some Mega Man.

Issue 4 just came out on Wednesday. You might get lucky and find them, but really this arc is pretty bare-bones to start setting things up--Dr. Wily and Light build the Robot Masters from Mega Man 1, Wily reprograms them to Be Evil, Mega Man kills all of them.
