Wow, what would be the point of any of the accomplishments of the party then?Dominic wrote:I figured it went without saying that fanfic does not count.
Trekkie, the everything in "World of Warcraft" resets inside of an hour. Dead leaders re-spawn, and towns are engineered to be impossible to take and hold.

Re: story telling thoughts
Now you see why I don't understand WoW.
From what I've seen, it's not about affecting the world around you, it's personal betterment. In real life, for example, one doesn't start a running regiment because it'll change the world, it'll just make you healthier in the end. (More and more of my friends are starting to realize this is dumb, and quitting, so.)

O6 nailed it. WoW is about building up fantasy self..with little other impact beyond the fantasy self. (Think of it as *exreme* insularity, with the player avoiding consequence both in real life and the game.)

Huh. So are all MMORPGs like this or just WOW? I mean, was Evercrack like that?

Re: story telling thoughts
Yeah, basically. I mean, think about it--if you put the power of the world into the hands of a userbase...they're just going to mess it all up. You've played GTA, yeah? Alright, now imagine if everything you do in GTA affects every other GTA player's universe. You're going to get into some very real problems very quickly when you're stealing everybody else's car.
Re: story telling thoughts
Yeah, suddenly it would be like real life and who the hell wants to play that? I guess that makes sense.
Re: story telling thoughts
Well, there would be no real consequence to the player. (After all, nobody who plays GTA would go to jail.)
I would lke to play in a dynamic game like that. Imagine trying to assasinate a governor, (as a merc), and finding out that somebody already collected the bounty. What to do then? (ehehehehehehehehe)

Re: story telling thoughts
I think there have been attempts to do this thing before. I'm not very well-versed in the MMO genre but I'm pretty sure The Matrix Online was doing something like this.
