Dom likes to read a comic and try to extrapolate what the writer is using the comic to say about the industry as a whole. I would also argue that by doing this he is trying to add his own meaning to the author's intent and by extension is trying to find meaning that isn't actually there to find. I usually just read a story and move on to the next other thing. Like TV. Or video games. Personally, I don't care enough about comics to read that much into what I read. I think this is part of why I don't pay attention to who writes or draws anything. It's because I'm not reaaaally a comics fan. I pick up a few here and there but that's about it. The only one I've gotten consistently is Transformers and that's because I'm a Transformers fan and would be picking it up anyway because it's Transformers. I think that's another reason I don't pay attention to writers and artists. Doesn't matter if you're gonna buy it anyway.

Parallax being the the batter effectively restores the yellow flaw of yesteryear. Given the retro-fetish that Johns has, I have to wonder if that actually might stick, effectively demodernizing the GL series.


Okay, wrapped up the haul for last week.

Osborn #4:
And, the goblin shall be our savior! That is a reference to both the religious overtones of this issue and the fact that it is the best thing I picked up last week. The first few issues seem a little disjointed. But, issue 4 is good enough that I am going to reread them either when, or a bit before, the fifth and final issue is released.

Batman Inc. #4:
Damn, Morrison has been eating his vitamins, with this issue coming out more or less on time, after issue 3 was several weeks late. It looks like Morrison is hinting at why the super-franchise would not work in this issue while giving stylistic nods to various past iterations of "Batman", including the silver Age (ala Morrison's "RIP" arc and the post-Crisis Miller-ized Batman. All in all, this is less interesting for what was done than for how it was done. And, again, it is impressive for being on time.

Parallax being inside the Central Battery isn't being used to restore the Yellow Impurity in this story though, he's being used to control the Green Lantern Corps. Besides, Johns has already established that the Green Lanterns who are aware Parallax causes the Yellow Impurity by inhabiting the Central Battery and learning to overcome the Fear he represents allows them to overcome the Yellow Impurity. So having the entire Corps being directly influenced by Parallax like this could actually give them the same experience they need to overcome the Yellow Impurity as well. Assuming Parallax will even be remaining inside the Green Lanterns Battery at the end of this story. I'm thinking he wont be staying personally given that's how he's currently controlling the Corps.

I do have a question about the current storyline though, and it pertains to the Guardians of the Universe.

Krona addresses one of them by name, and even kills him. It's outright stated that Krona knew him way back when, before the little blue guys took on the responsibility of looking after the universe. But didn't all the original Guardians die in Emerald Twilight, with the exception of Ganthet? Aren't the current Guardians actually the children of the original Guardians and Zamarons? Maybe not, maybe I missed some development during the Kyle Rayner years that returned the originals to life. I didn't read the book at all after the first few issues once Rayner became the main character. But I was under the impression that the current Guardians aren't the originals at all.

The Guardians were actually resurrected by Kyle the first time he had the Ion powers. It was explained when the Guardians sacrificed themselves to create Kyle's ring, their essence was somehow also contained within it. When Kyle decided to use the Ion power to restore the power of the Central Battery (which is also the reason why he lost the Ion powers that time), he simultaneously released that essence and brought back the Guardians as children for Ganthet to raise. He had hoped that under Ganthet's parentage, the children Guardians could grow up knowing what it is to truly live life. Unfortunately, with perhaps the exception of Sayd, they returned to their strict outlook of emotionless logic and order.

...speaking of, I should actually go buy and red volumes 3 and 4. For as much as I talk about loving that book, I have not kept up with it at all.

I hate most comic books for the same reason I hate syndicated TV shows. They sacrifice story and character for the sake of money and fan-pandering, adding more and more layers of crap so long as it's making the studio dollar. If you have a story to tell, decide how long it is and don't let any amount of money convince you to stretch it out. Mind you, I realise the inventors of characters like Spider-Man and the Green Lantern had NO intention of telling a self-contained story with them. Such is pulp.

That explains where I got the children idea then. And that makes sense of the Guardians "dying" as they imparted all of their energy to Ganthet in GL #50 of the last series. They were making sure they survived. I remember some talk at the time wondering if the Guardians had gone into the ring and were keeping an eye on Kyle.
