I'm kinda stuck in a bad situation at work at the moment, being forced to clear up work before I leave for another job on the 18th of this month. And I can't clear any of my leave balance because there's just too much work to do.

Well that's understandable, I'm between jobs at the moment, so I only have that annoying, guilt-ridden free time you get when you're waiting on a callback. =p

I can wait years for these reviews, it's not like I've got the disposable income to just buy them on a whim.

The contract at my second job ran out, and there is no work there now. So, I am playing "Custom House" here at my other job. I am trying to find something else, as the idleness is taking a financial and mental toll on me.

So, what, is it widely assumed Blitzwing is a superior toy to Lugnut...? I assume he doesn't have any detachable accessories, besides maybe red and blue energy-shaped missiles.

TFA Soundwave

Soundwave is the second TFA figure I've liked enough to buy. The original character is fairly iconic within Transformers, probably for two reasons. 1) The very distinctive voice, and 2) the cassette-bots that he could eject at will. It's a memorable gimmick that continues to be associated with the character. The Cybertron version of the character was a stealth bomber rather than a cassette player, but it still retained the 'tape deck' gimmick on the chest, and came with a version Laserbeak, arguably the most well-known of the original cassettes. Though of course, the original Soundwave came packaged with Buzzsaw.

The Animated Soundwave carries a lot of visual cues from the original. This time around he's a boxy vehicle that the card refers to as an SUV, though it's fairly close to a Scion, a mini-van type of vehicle that several of my co-workers drive. The vehicle is dark blue with black painted windows (so I assume dark tinting is implied). It's got highlights in a seafoam green that contrast vividly with the dark blue. Here's where the visual reference back to the cassette player comes in. The pattern on the doors on both sides resembles the spools and window at the center of a cassette tape. On the front of the vehicle is a pattern that roughly resembles the FF/RW, stop, play and pause buttons on the cassette player, and a further unpainted cassette spool and window pattern is on the rear windshield. A gold Decepticon insignia is on the hood, and what can probably be described as a 'power button' emblem is on the top of the vehicle.

Flip the Scion over, and there's very little evident robot kibble on the bottom of the car. That always scores extra points with me.

Transformation: The lower rear and center of the car become the arms, the center underside of the car folds up to become the chest, the head folds down from the upper rear of the car, which remains a backpack. The waist rotates, and the legs have some fairly clever panel folding to get into the proper configuration.

Robot: Stumpy. This thing's visually in between a basic/scout class and a deluxe, at least in height. It's still mainly dark blue, with the seafoam highlights consisting of circles on either side of the head, chevrons on the waist, wrists and knees, and the rear wheel hubs. The feet are gold. The head has typically TFA distorted features. The lower half of the head is very wide with a narrow gold faceplate and 'vents', while the upper half of the head is smaller than the lower half. It's G1 Soundwave in some respects, with the center crest and horns on either side, along with the visor, but squashed together and stylized. The chest has the 'cassette deck', with gold buttons and a gold-rimmed smoked glass window. In a very nice bit of detail, there are what appear to be sculpted 'sound level bars' behind the plastic, barely visible. A nice touch.

Soundwave looks pretty good from all angles. All the bright highlights from the vehicle mode are visible on the outside of the arms and on the back and the legs. Posability is good as well, with the knee ball joints probably the weak spot when it comes to balance. They could stand to be stiffer than they are.

Laserbeak: is a red and black v-shaped guitar that's way out of scale with the Scion. Produced on the cheap, he's all black plastic with red on the body and tuning area of the guitar. Transformation consists of folding the two halves of the playing area of the guitar aside to form wings, revealing Laserbeak's head. And that's it. Much like Frenzy with TFTM Barricade, it's a cool accessory that would be a poor figure on its own. It's far better than Frenzy however. I may have to paint the eyes though.

Overall: though I'm not fond of the Animated aesthetic, I like this Transformer. It's a nice adaptation of Soundwave into the line, even if the cassette decoration elements have nothing to do with the vehicle. The transformation is very nicely engineered, and Laserbeak makes for a fine accessory. I'd recommend this figure, even for non-TFA fans like me.
