The Spoileriffic Movie Discussion Thread

Money, violence, sex, computer graphics, scatalogical humor, racism, robots designed to be rednecks but given European accents, and maybe another sequel to the saga... what's not to love? TF m1, Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon and now Age of Extinction.

Okay, so. There is a FIFTY PAGE THREAD at the Allspark on whether ROTF was subjectively or objectively bad. It devolved into a discussion on whether the objective quality of creative arts is culture-dependent or not, what with ROTF failing miserably in the eye of the established western cinema critique while still making truckloads of money. I personally think that viral marketing and the success of the first have a lot to answer for, as does the current world clime and the need for 'mindless distractions', but I retain my position that I'm saddened that TF will now be judged as a whole by ROTF in the eyes of many.

Read This Fifty Page Thread if you have the time. It fascinated me.

EDIT: Link corrected.

Holy crap, I just now realised why Chucky and Tiffany's kids are called Glen and Glenda. Haha, that movie was serious crap, but nice nod, all the same.

You just linked to a 4 page thread their 86.

The discrepancy between the critics and other movie-viewers is based on expectations and standards, as well as what both parties base their grades on. Genre expectations are also a factor. A friend of mine came up with an idea for a TF movie that met his expectations of the genre (and franchise) that was....to put it bluntly, 'tard-fodder. (The man has an MA in English.) He expects and demands TF be as stupid as possible. Effectively, Bay's movie was too smart for his liking.

Critics tend to have this problem. These are the people who complain about the Nolan "Batman" movies being too smart. They want moronization in spandex, and cannot accept anything else.

Other people simply avoid movies that require thought, hence the success of movies like "Under Siege".

This is also a problem for books as well. This is why books by guys who "have mastered the idiom", (exact words from the back of "Satanic Verses"), even if the book is trash. (Frankly, I hope one of the Ayatollah's boys manages to bag Rushdie, just to remove a bad writer from the population.)

The need for childish distractions is perhaps one of the greatest arguements against free markets one could find. Still, I prefer the honest stupidity of Bay to the pretense of Marvel or DC.

I wholeheartedly agree. Wow, in that light, ROTF doesn't seem that bad at all. :D

I'm working towards a film project this semester, and I reached a realization: I want to make the project "cool", obviously, but I don't want to lose the honesty in it. A project that's honest or personal is going to be so much more interesting than something that's just trying so hard to be awesome. Bay's Transformers are devoid of honesty or heart for sake of being cool. I don't see any honesty in them, just dumb fake posturing.

kinda drunk and can't think up other words for honest or cool

Yes. There is no heart or fun to these guys, it's all about trying to make with the badass. And while it works for a few particular moments, it's overall ridiculous, and even kinda boring. And for crying the hell out loud, when you can make a movie with giant robots beating on each other boring, then you're doing something wrong.

Well I didn't find the movies boring necessarily. Although the next time I watch them I may go through and make notes of all the discrepancies. Y'know, fer fun.
