It had nothing to do with naming conventions. You had one guy, from one series, named LioConvoy (who'd even been sold here by Hasbro under that name) and another guy, from a totally different series, named Leo Prime. I see what you are saying. But, "color=character" became a standard in the early part of the last decade. Willis was just following that precedent with Lio Primvoy.
I figured that the name change was similar to Bluestreak/Silverstreak.
