Universe2.0/Generations Review Thread

The modern comics universe has had such a different take on G1, one that's significantly represented by the Generations toys, so they share a forum. A modern take on a Real Cybertronian Hero. Currently starring Generations toys, IDW "The Transformers" comics, MTMTE, TF vs GI Joe, and Windblade. Oh wait, and now Skybound, wheee!

Yeah, I see that, dunno what Archer was on about then.

I got Shockwave and Optimus, at the new price of $15 they are really small and it's hard to see where the money goes. They're also simpler than previous deluxes, less parts, less paint apps, simpler transformations. Optimus is alright even though he's teeny compared to the WFC figure, I like FOC OP's vehicle mode better and his transformation does enough for the simplicity of what's available, robot mode is a tad narrow at the hips and shoulders though.

FOC Shockwave is pretty cool, lots of personality, but they left screw holes facing forward in robot mode which is lame. Eye is red. Vehicle mode kinda works and kinda looks like nothing, but with personality.

Shockwave's eye isn't red; it's the same purply-magenta colour the rest of his transluscent parts are. (Is this gonna be another thing like with Road Rage?)

No, that was Dom fretting over that. I doubt JT cares that much about Shockwave's eye.

Quite right, I give very little shits about the difference between red and magenta/purple in this case, it's purple in the game but while I can see the plastic is purple, held to the light it's mostly reddish, and I don't care either way.

And Road Rage looks red to me, and I don't care.

I thought as much. I mean, I'm a Shockwave fan to the point of it being my username and even I don't care about his eye color.

O6 was referring to Dom's obsession with whether or not Road Rage's parts were black or dark blue since he was thinking of customizing the Botcon Tracks for it.

No, Dom was pissy that the Botcon toys are purple while the original's were dark blue. Road Rage's blue is that same dark blue-purply colour that a G1 Optimus is.

Sounds totally worth conversation. ;)

Annnnyway, I bought FOC Jazz despite knowing he's a mess of a toy. Why? Because he's awesome in the game! The figure has ideas, but not the size or budget to deliver on them, and honestly there's a real sense of laziness to the transformation used here when the game version has a fairly easy-to-follow transformation. Jazz's alt mode looks good from some angles but they left out key black paint for the side windows despite giving black paint to the back of the car rear deck, and from the back the car is awful because instead of that swooping rear bumper they just cut it off and leave the friggin' hands dangling out the sloppy back. Transformation is interesting in that the whole thing is secretly folding panels like origami, but it doesn't hold together all that well in either mode and isn't worth the changes to the game model. Bot mode looks alright from straight on, but the gaps in the chest get obvious from a lot of angles. The overall proportions are a tad out of whack with a very small waist and skinny legs. The visor is blue trans plastic but it requires a VERY strong flashlight to show this, most of the time it's just blackness - since this is the ONLY trans plastic on the figure, someone at Hasbro was way too asleep at the wheel on the test shot QC. This should have been the world's easiest catch, but it feels like whomever was making choices on Jazz had no care or interest in the figure at all, just cut corners here and let mistakes by there, who cares as long as the paycheck comes. Still, through all that Jazz's personality comes through and there's enough of a figure here to be enjoyable if you're a fan of the game character, but it's not much of a figure for anybody else. I have mine posed in his just-about-to-transform breakdancing upside-down helicopter spin. :D

Did you and I buy the same toy? Because my Jazz locks together in both modes. There's pegs and holes for everything. The chest is held together with a couple of slots just beneath the neck and the back actually pegs into the backside of the waist. The arms snap into place on the sides of the chest...

I agree FOC Jazz is the only one from wave one that looks like it's worth buying. the alt mode looks like a homage to the 2005 cybertron toy line designs. the robot mode is really highly detailed & a decent robot height. while most on-line fans hate the robot head design,I think it looks like a great jazz head homage & it's really detailed in a nice way. not robot head detailed in a horror ugly movie verse TF toy way.

All this FOC toy ranting makes no sense. because on-line fans have been over begging for cybertronian styled alt modes for decades. hasbro finally listens to fans. then fans do a complete 360 & hate it. I can sorta understanding mocking the wrong toy size scales. I can't understand mocking the cybertronian styled designs. some fans say the FOC Combaticons are awful because their too bulky. if hasbro made them sleek, they would have said their too puny looking.

Yeah, actually I'm gonna disagree there, Shockwave is really the best of the three, with Optimus a close second and Jazz actually being the worst of the three. Shockwave also has everything lock together in both modes and doesn't look disproportioned in either mode. Optimus looks pretty decent in both modes as well, but has a couple of kibbly bits under his arm that don't lock down anywhere. Jazz's chest is hugely disproportionate to the rest of the figure. It's to the point that I don't even really like to display it in robot mode. It's not horribly offensive, but it's still noticeably bad. I'm also not a fan of the faux wheels.
