Heart of Darkness discussion

The modern comics universe has had such a different take on G1, one that's significantly represented by the Generations toys, so they share a forum. A modern take on a Real Cybertronian Hero. Currently starring Generations toys, IDW "The Transformers" comics, MTMTE, TF vs GI Joe, and Windblade. Oh wait, and now Skybound, wheee!

I see what you are saying about not wanting to open up that can of worms. But, I will say that the question is different in this case in that it is not based on anybody's desire to not have things change from the3 1984 status quo.

That said, if somebody wants to argue that G1 (movie) Galvatron is not Megatron, then they should also be arguing that G1 (cartoon) Megatron is dead and completely over-written by Galvatron. (I have not heard anybody argue that second point, which is just as well because Galvatron has Megatron's memories.)

This was a can before? Like before IDW's Galvatron? Why would this have been a debate before now? As far as I know, IDW is the first time Galvatron isn't Megatron, but his own separate character.

*sigh*

Remember the soul scarring year of 1986? Remember that summer when you went to see TFTM and at least one character you liked died horribly? We were all ready for Prime. But, there were a dozen or so other opportunities for completely out of the blue trauma.

Some people handled it better than others. Some of us went home and stared at our toys, sorting them into "still okay to use" and "only okay to use if we assume the movie has not happened yet". (Until the comics took over as my primary source, Wheeljack and several other Autobots never encountered the Predacons as far as I was concerned.) Some of us spent time staring at the wall. Some of use would watch episodes from seasons one and two with a sort of bitter sweet melancholy.

(Truth: I still get a bit weirded when I see Wheeljack in season 1. And, whenever I see Windcharger in "The Ultimate Doom", part of me wants to scream, "you are going to die!"....)

Now, in contrast to the above, some people handled it *really* badly. In what might be the first example of wholly self-indulgent fan-fixing in the hobby, many people simply chose to ignore the movie or to pretend that certain scenes did not happen. This was not a question of people using mental tricks to reconcile clear and obvious mistakes, (such as the multiple Constructicon origins or questions about who Cyclonus was), or legitimately missing/mis-viewing something (for years I thought Bluestreak died on the shuttle, not Prowl), but out and out saying that something clearly depicted in the movie did not really happen that way.

Megatron being rebuilt into Galvatron is the biggest example of this. There was a sizeable portion of the fandom, (largely GeeWunners), who argued without sarcasm that Galvatron =/= Megatron, even in the context of the cartoon. Their case rested on deliberate misreadings of official sources, giving undue weight to character profiles that they normally ignored and outright making up stuff and arguing that it was totally what was actually in the movie.

Dom
-not making this up. Honestly.

I'm kinda holding out hopes that IDW galvatron defeats megatron. then IDW galvatron some how merges with megatron. by either putting megatron's spark into his body. or having galvatron kill megatron & use megatron's body parts as armor for galvatron's body.

...You know you could actually be right. I would not put it past them.

I tend to think Tiger Megatron is on to something, maybe with D-Void being the Undermind and/or Unicron? The more I think about it, the more I am thinking Abnett is going to give us something resembling a bad fanfic before this is all over.

I never did discuss this issue, did I? I need to do a proper review, but I'll just say this: I think it's a major mistake to explore the dead universe in any detail, as they're starting to do. Let it stay mysterious and let the readers' imaginations do the work. Anything else can't fail to disappoint.

Failing that, if they are going to map out the dead universe....do a better job of it.

I am really hoping this goes better than we are anticipating.
