You're not even listening to me. That wasn't my point in the first place. My point is BW fans do more terrible fanfic than any other group I've seen--if not in number, then definitely in terms of how retarded it gets.

When you try to seriously write about 'existing' Transformers having relationships with each other, 'for no reason,' it's really dumb. IMO, Primal wouldn't be with anybody in the BW cast because he *wasn't with anybody in the BW cast.* Maybe he had a wife back home, maybe he didn't, who cares? It's not essential to his character.

It's the same debate as which Seeker / Insecticon became Cyclonus, but at least more open to discussion and with marginally more relevance to real life. In that regard, I support TF shipping. Not much though. It's just not a romance-enabling franchise.

I would say that shipping is less open to discussion than the Skywarp/Bombshell question. There is less evidence to support shipping in BW beyond the pairs that Crab mentioned. In the case of Skywarp/Bombshell, there is evidence for both, on screen more or less at the same time.


On another note, Gomess, you study the media. Is it just me, or are Western cultures the only ones that really put a high value of ownership of IP? (Count Islamic as Western for this question.)

I think we have different definitions of "open to discussion". I guess what I really meant is that shipping conversations generally last longer. And, personally, I just find discussing character motivations and emotions more interesting than Toei's lazy animation checking.

It's hard to generalise, but if you really want to, then you can safely say that any country which has had long-term trade links with the UK or USA is particularly likely to value ownership of intellectual property. France, for example, despite being a decidedly western country, didn't have the same values until quite recently. Previous to that, it was much more like Japan, which can easily be explained away by the fact that Japan has had strong trade links with France (Spain and Portugal too) for many many centuries. Heck, it was the Portuguese who taught samurai how to use guns. But yeah, if you interpret "Western" as "English language", then western cultures are certainly more cagey when it comes to copyright infringement, but countries like France and China are leaning towards that mindset.

The shipping conversations generally rely on (often deliberate) misreadings of the series though. (One of the more common examples being "Megatron loves Nightbird".) If the actual writers of a series did not ship the characters, there is no need for fans to do so. There may simply not be an emotion or motivation to discuss.

Obviously, it is hard to generalize. Many people would argue that Eastern Europe is more Western than say....the sub-continent or North Africa. But, working in adult ed, I have seen far less plagerism from North Africans than from various Europeans. Truth be told, I have seen more evidence than I am sometimes confortable thinking about that confirms the "criminal Italian" stereotype. (Granted, I have also seen some...odd methods of citation. But, that is a far cry from plagerizing.) Russia is known for all manner of boot-legging and such.

But, swapping out "Toilets" with "Lady Gaga" yielded some truly awful (even by the standards of the genre) furry art.

This means we can not only take comfort in Godwin's law, but that we are also that much further away from Rule 34 Albert Speer. *phew*

That said, yeah, Sonic fan art is pretty bad. It is almost a grotesque parody of "insular fans trying to make their hobby relevant by inserting their hobby into everything". (The problem is that the effort is too earnest to be a parody.)
