GoBots thread

The originals... ok, not exactly, but the original named "The TransFormers" anyway. Take THAT, Diaclone!

Remember, some pages might have to pay for too many people linking to them. So, in fairness, I cannot blame them for locking out images.

So, lemmee guess, the "Machine Robo" guys are not organic on the inside like GoBots.

Actually, they are. As I said in the other thread, the Machine Robo and Devil Invaders were originally squishy aliens from the "Romulus star system" that "evolved" into their current cyborg forms on Earth and in the Casmozone, respectively.

Their original forms are never actually seen, but my experience with Japanese "stuff" tells me they're organic sci-fi aliens like any other. I'd be *very* surprised if they started off as non-transforming alien robots. Pretty inconceivable.

Aaaand that's just the original toy packaging story. The anime I posted screencaps from totally overwrites that, making the Machine Robo... well, it's a hard one to explain. They're ostensibly cyborgs. Or just "robot life forms" like the Japanese portrayal of Transformers. As you can see, one of them is pretty bloody human-looking. It's either a total mess, or total genius.

So, did the human looking one transform?

And, yeah, for whatever reason, Japan tends to be averse to making the characters start off as sentient robots. Cyborgs or piloted mecha are fine. And, Transectors were arguably a concession to that cultural preference. But, sentient robots? Nah.

He didn't "transform" per se, but combined with two larger robot bodies. He's more in the Nebula mould, I guess. No word on why he and his sister get human skin, and the rest of the poor guys have to go without... =[

But that's the Cronos series, it's kind of butt. I much prefer the original concept.

Oh, and the Rock Lords turn up in the Cronos series. Magmar is DEVIL ROCK.

Well, now if I ever see an image of Magmar again, I won't be able to do it without hearing "Twist of Cain".

Ah, the ol' Go-Bots. A few years ago, I'd have likely had the same mindset as Trekkie. Which is basically, if I'm reading it right "Go-Bots: Doofier Transformers". But lately, I've gained a new appreciation for 'em. I barely remember the show at all, and I doubt I'll do much catching up with it. But I will say, I really do like the idea that they were basically human at one point. Still, that's not the reason that I could start picking up a few Go-Bots here and there.

The reason behind that is that they just look friggin' cool. They're crude, but there's a real appeal to their designs. Maybe there's a lot of clunkers, I can't sit here and tell you I know what every Go-Bot looked like, but dudes like Staxx, Cy-Kill, Zero, Small Foot, Pathfinder, and especially the greatest of 'em all, Tux, those are all great toys. Spent two bucks on a Tux awhile back, it was a great investment in rad.

Another of my favorites is that Scorpion tank that Dom mentioned, imaginatively named Scorp. That guy was great, I had him back in the day and particularly liked it.

What the hell else? I like the names, too. But then, I love stupid puns. Cy-Kill? Vanguard? Good Knight? Amazing.

And if we're gonna get into Rock Lords, Slimestone was absolutely the man. For real. Though...wasn't one named "Tombstone"? If not, there should have been.

Oh yeah, that Command Center. That was another thing that I wasn't wild about as a kid, but I love the look of it now. The simple robot face on the base mode? That thing, in it's way, has the same appeal as a classic Doctor Who villain, or something like the Iron Giant or like that. Again, crude, kind of, but really kind of great in it's way.

Actually, my knee-jerk reaction to anything Gobots borders on Geewunny. I dunno why, but I have some sort of mental block with even wanting to like Gobots. Like, at all.

I'd by one, but it sounds like I'd rather have the thing Weirdwing's a part of. But ultimately, Tux has to be recognized as the greatest Go-Bot ever, just by virtue of being the most dapper and sophisticated.

Magmar was a fan of Danzig, after all. Actually I'm surprised there weren't more Gobots with characteristics of societal subcultures. That's one thing TF had over it, I guess. Where's my moody goth Gobot? Where's my aggressive punk Gobot? Where's my ditzy valley girl Gobot?

There *was* a Rock Lord named Tombstone. He had sorta reptilian features. Never got him, but I do still have Slimestone, and he's still shiny and silver after all these years!

The thing you mustn't forget about Tux, either, is that he was a Renegade. A stereotypical gent... as a *baddie*?? Gobots breaking new ground again. Also, metal tophat. No amount of metal beards can beat that, Transformers.

Also, you know what? "Guardians and Renegades" is actually one of the better faction binaries to come out of the 80s. "Autobots and Decepticons" is good in that they bear a little more analysis than, say, "Protectons and Terrakors" or "G.I. Joe and Cobra", but there's something about the down-to-earth vagueness of Guardians and Renegades that appeals to me. Guardians of what? Renegades against what? As Dom said, it's a shame there'll probably never be a story that examines these elements.

...To the Ficmobile!!

*Ficmobile's brakes have been cut, spins out of control and crashes into a tree that is in fact a gigantic Dom's leg*

I kid because I love?

No point in writing about characters/settings that ain't yours.

I tend to avoid GoBots toys new simply because there are so few in good condition. I nearly bought that forklift guy every body goes on about a few years back. But, the figure was in such bad condition that it was not worth the nearly $10 it was priced at. (I would not have even paid $1 for it.) If I had the skill and resources, I would buy up old figure and reverse engineer them, similar to what KOToys does. (Well, what KOToys did before they went kerflooopie.)

And, sadly, re-issues are all but impossible. As I understand it, the property was split. Hasbro picked up the IP side. But, the moulding is in the hands of another company. (I want to say Bandai, but do not quote me on this.)
