The kinds of books Dom is decrying are, I've always assumed, more along the lines of "Iron Man Fights The Hulk! Again! For...no reason!" Sure, there's a reason buried in there, but the fact is, the writer has created the reason as a vehicle to make Iron Man fight The Hulk.

People spend so much time worrying about whether a figure is "mint" or not that they never stop to consider other flavours.

Yeah, I'm none too fond of that kind of story either.

Wow, this is O6's day for summing up my points nicely.

In the case of AHM, most of the characters were written as they were defined. In some cases, like Megatron, the character had several contrary definitions, making it unreasonable to expect McCarthy to write them strictly according to precedent.

Ok, well I'll concede that just using characters for the sake of using characters sucks. And it sucks because then the writer is basically dreamin up some deus ex machina bs situation that fits what he was told to do but really doesn't fit for the characters.

As for AHM, McCarthy seemed to be writing them based off of their original tech spec descriptions which lead to some great stories and great character development that also furthered the story in a new and interesting way.

Yes. What Dom is pointing out in his post is that, while that's what McCarthy was doing, Furman was trying to characterize Megs a little differently in the -ation books.

It's kinda similar to what's being done with Galvatron now, actually, except not on such a grand scale.

Having just read through the -ation books again, the only real difference I see in Megs characterization is that in AHM McCarthy seems to want us to think that he's somehow all knowing and has accounted for absolutely everything where as in the -ation books he doesn't. He gets surprised there and it's no big deal like it is in AHM.

The discussion is circling on the point of how Megs is treating Starscream's attempts to overthrow Megs. In Infiltration, Megs is basically willing to kill Starscream for even attempting to overthrow him--meanwhile, in AHM, Megs is being far less ruthless.

Of course, one can also assume that the situation in AHM is worse than it was in Infiltration, and Megatron actually needs Starscream at this juncture, whereas in Infiltration, he didn't.

Good point. I totally glossed over that.

it is less a question of McCarthy writing Megatron as all-knowing than it is a question of McCarthy writing Megatron as presenting himself as all-knowing.

On another note: My comic store did not order volume III of AHM for me. With volume II, I *might, just maybe, have forgotten to order it. But, I made doubly sure I ordered volumes III and IV. (And, hey, given that I have to order everything issue by issue, I spend plenty of time looking at Diamond Previews.)

And, they still did not order it. (I called earlier today.) I am starting to think Comicazi does not want my money.

I wouldn't tolerate that. At least not with so many other comic book stores available in an economy where most people are lucky if they can even afford the things to begin with. I say kick 'em to the curb and find a shop that will actually appreciate your business.
