F-Zero.

Every single game in the series (even the Japan-only BS F-Zero and F-Zero Climax).

It's still amazing.

Only racing game I enjoy.

Can you believe the first one only had four characters and no multiplayer?? Ridiculous.

...After this marathon, I can conclude X is still the best. Something about the whole presentation. The artwork, the music, the course design, the little comic book ending pictures... AND CAPTAIN FALCON UNMASKED

GX is great and all, but it's so... visually noisy. And doesn't reeallyy add anything new, like X did (26 new characters?! That must be a record for any game series). The fact I don't actually own a GameCube and can only play it on my girlfriend's sister's Wii doesn't help. That just ain't convenient.

Soyeah, F-Zero. GO ON, YOU'RE WAY OUT IN FRONT!

YEAH! THE FINAL LAP!

I was really disappointed by GX. The music is just fucking awful! A travesty when you consider F-Zero has one of the greatest soundtracks ever.

Oh, I dunno. I still listen to Blood Falcon, Octoman, Don Genie and Deathborn's themes from time to time. But granted, the swerve from glossy thrash to mostly techno was a jarring one, and GX's actual *racing* soundtrack didn't have as much character as X's. ...On the other hand, the pilot themes had a lot of diversity.

Ideally I'd hope for a game that uses a combination; a solid 'metal' soundtrack like X's, with more diverse themes for the individual pilots.

Of course, the likelihood of a new F-Zero game any time soon is... ehhh. If only Sega had wasted all that time they wasted on new Sonic games on new F-Zero games. The handheld stuff is good, but I want one on a console! And not based on the rather generic anime universe!

F-Zero has been completely ignored in the wake of the Wii, not unlike Star Fox. It's sad. It's like, since Nintendo can't find some shitty gimmicky way to use the Wiimote and slap an existing Ninty franchise on top, then why bother, right?

Nevermind that they could totally use it like a pilot's stick for Star Fox...

I found the old Starwing (as the SNES game was known over here) manual while packing for my imminent move the other day, and was blown away by how much the design ethic of that series has changed.

The last I saw of Starfox it was just garish generic modern nonsense like anything else, with all the characters gurning away like Sonic ripoffs in their colour-coded sentai suits... but the original manual? Damn, those models look cool. I love Fox's oversized gloves that don't fit his paws at all. There's a level of depth and irony there that just makes the original seem so much more mature and self-aware than whatever modern Starfox game I'm thinking of.

Same goes for F-Zero. The GX renders are so flat and dull compared to X's hand-drawn artwork.

I almost don't blame Nintendo for forgetting about these franchises; they've proved, with Mario, Zelda and Metroid, that they've essentially run out of creativity and enthusiasm. Starfox or F-Zero on Wii would probably just be a painfully atypical affair, and they'll never top the older stuff.

Nintendo used to be the only stuff I knew, 'cos I had a SNES- then N64- and couldn't afford anything else, but I'm recently realising what a dull producer they are. Not that any video game studio really makes me go WOWZERS with their original concepts. Much like movies, a lot of it seems to be remakes, rehashes, movie licenses and sheer franchise-flogging.

EDIT: Pretty sure that recent Starfox game I was so critical of is called Starfox Command. Yeah, the art design in this game is genuinely awful. It looks like something- a cartoon, rather than a game, but whatevs- from the late 70s or early 80s. And not in a kewl retro way.

Dang, you guys. Reading this has me thinking of all the hours I used to spend playing original F-Zero. Yeah, four cars seems ridiculous now, but it seemed to be enough. Now I'm kind of curious about the later entries in the franchise.

Yeah, I love F-Zero and I think I have F-Zero X for 64. Might fire that up sometime soon. Starfox 64 is the last one that I played and it was basically the SNES game with better graphics. I did like the fact that there are two different boss battles depending on which route you take. And there's the what I like to call "Independence Day" level where you have the mother ship sending out fighters and you have to defend the city by taking out the fighters and then the mother ship.

Check it out if you can Scourge, it was awesome at the time to go from only four playable machines to races with *30 machines at once* (all of whom are playable).

Mine's slow as shite, and I don't really.. do.. online gaming. It just has zero appeal for me, compared to plugging a cartridge in a console in a room full of people with food and drinks to share. It's about the whole experience. I can wait!
