Gonna be honest, *never* got past the second world. Beat the first fake King Koopa, got stuck somewhere after there and never tried again. I really did find Mario quite difficult; much moreso than Sonic.Shockwave wrote:Namely the original Super Mario Bros. The first one. That came with the system. Classic stuff right there. It's a favorite that I keep going back to and never get sick of.

Re: On a Mission
SMB1 is brutal on its later levels. I've got a save on the Game Boy Colour port that's been stuck at 8-3 for about nine years.
Re: On a Mission
Forgive me for bragging, but . . .
a couple years back my friends and I were playing SMB1 on New Year's Eve. They were having a hard time of it. Finally gave up. I took up the controller and said, "Give me 8 minutes." They balked. Then I proceeded to speed-run through that game so fast, that they were screaming and biting their nails at every jump and every pit where it seemed certain I was about to die. World 1-2 warp to World 4. World 4-2 warp to World 8. They couldn't believe it. I was already in World 8 and still had 4 minutes to go.
I slipped up on the final jumps leading up to the flagpole in 8-3. They all screamed in shock, but I quickly regrouped and finished off the game. 10 minutes, dammit!
And that's my story. But I think I've humbled myself with all the beatings I've taken from my list, that I'm allowed one moment to brag.

Then you didn't beat the game.Mako Crab wrote:World 1-2 warp to World 4. World 4-2 warp to World 8. They couldn't believe it. I was already in World 8 and still had 4 minutes to go.
I mean, it's still an accomplishment to beat World 8, but unless you actually walked through all seven worlds before it? No point. It's like beating Contra with the Konami Code, or using NARPASSWORD in Metroid.

Sounds like it's on.

Re: On a Mission
Not that I'm directly saying I can beat SMB1 all the way through--simply stating my criteria.
(For the record, I used to be able to beat Contra on a continue. Haven't been able to do it in a bit, but.)

Re: On a Mission
I would love to be able to have that as my criteria but unfortunately I fantastically suck at video games. I do think I have gone through all the levels of SMB1 though. But yeah, warp zones are the fastest. Next up: Castlevania! Got 1-3 on NES, IV on SNES. Never got any of the ones past that because I could never get into it after that. The gameplay on some of the later games just didn't do it for me.
Come to think of it, one game that always kicked my ass was Solstice. I finally beat it a few years ago. For the first time. And I did it without cheating so bonus. I'm surprised how well my original NES games have held up all this time. I had a little trouble getting MM3 to work but with a little coaxing it did finally work.

Re: On a Mission
Sooo Trekwave are you one of these that hates Castlevania II for its grand betrayal of the series? I have to say I kind liked the idea. It reminded me of Zelda II, which I *loved*. And I didn't even get to play that until the late 90s, as I got into video games way late.
...I definitely prefer it to the first one, anyway. Simon just wasn't fast enough for my liking. And Castlevania III was great for all its added features and branching storyline, but bloody the pit was it *hard*!

Re: On a Mission
Castlevania II was a betrayal of the series? How so? It didn't bother me at all since I actually got that one first, then 1 and then 3. And on top of that, my Mom beat it before I did within 2 weeks of buying it. I don't... really know why I just mentioned that...

Re: On a Mission
Many fans see it as too far removed from the original, what with the free-roaming massive world map, aribtrary item questing and total lack of bosses.
