Movies are awesome
Re: Movies are awesome
Man, if you can't see the difference between "There COULD be a female character in this role" and "There ISN'T a female character in this role" then... I don't even know.
But hey, we've dipped our toes in gender politics before, and it's clear we have fundamentally different beliefs. But I guess I can at least admire your belief that the Star Wars universe is equal opportunity, and widely accepted as such. I'll be very happy when I believe the same.
And uh, apologies to everyone for hijacking the thread with the same thing I hijacked the last thread with. I haven't seen any movies recently!

You keep taking things to an extreme, making it not what I'm actually saying at all...Gomess wrote:Man, if you can't see the difference between "There COULD be a female character in this role" and "There ISN'T a female character in this role" then... I don't even know.

Extreme? It's the exact same point I had at the start. There is a huuge difference in the eyes of the majority audience, particularly when it comes to representation in the mass media, between something possible and something actually being.
In the land of fanfic and expanded universe novel whatsits, I'm sure there are lady Siths coming out of the woodwork, but the movies *are* Star Wars as far as the majority audience is concerned, and there are no lady Sith in the movies. Therefore, the majority audience think that all Sith are male.
It's a very simple representation issue, so don't try to fog it by accusing me of suddenly taking things to extremes when I've basically just been repeating myself with every post. 8|
...And seriously, for the second time, what is *your* point? You just seem to be disagreeing with my opinion and not proffering your own.

I don't think you realize the popularity of Star Wars media outside of the movies. You claim a majority only know the movies, but I think there are a lot more people that have seen the Clone Wars cartoon, played the video games or read at least some of the books than you believe or give credit for.Gomess wrote:Extreme? Guess I shouldn't be surprised you'd say that with how you've mis-read the last couple of my posts on the subject... My point is that I believe there is a larger influence and popularity of Star Wars media outside the movies and the audiences are aware of female presence within the Jedi/Sith ranks which is present within both the movies and other media. And disagreeing with an opinion would itself be an opinion....And seriously, for the second time, what is *your* point? You just seem to be disagreeing with my opinion and not proffering your own.

No, actually it wouldn't. Read some Mates or Damer or something. It's cool you have your own groove, but it's not one that's conducive to discussion.Sparky Prime wrote:And disagreeing with an opinion would itself be an opinion.
So, I think the non-movie Star Wars media isn't anywhere near as famous as the movies, and you think it is. That's fair enough, isn't it? And seeing as you're more aware of Star Wars fandom than me and I used to work in media analysis, I'm gonna go ahead and say that makes our opinions even.

Now you're arguing what an opinion is? If you don't believe it would then perhaps you need to see the definition...Gomess wrote:No, actually it wouldn't. Read some Mates or Damer or something. It's cool you have your own groove, but it's not one that's conducive to discussion.
Opinion: a personal view, attitude, or appraisal.
Unless you analyzed Star Wars itself, I don't see how just having worked in media analysis would be relevant to this discussion. And seeing as you're more aware of Star Wars fandom than me and I used to work in media analysis, I'm gonna go ahead and say that makes our opinions even.

Ok, I just tried to point out how both our positions were equally valid, but you're still determined to "win," so... I'm done.

Man, Sparky, you must not work with the public or...any amount of people who aren't entirely fucking nerds.
If I go into my office tomorrow morning and ask, "Hey, guys, can females be Sith?" then the only response I'm going to get is "What the fuck is a Sith?" I'm going to have to explain that the Sith are the bad guys of the Star Wars universe. And once I do that, they're going to call me a nerd and tell me to get back to work.
Normal people don't read Star Wars novels. Nerds do. Are there a large population of nerds who read Star Wars novels? Absolutely. Does that mean jack shit to the public consciousness? Probably not.
CHARANGING STAGE: Go out on the street, or the mall, or something, and ask ten-twenty people if they even know what a Sith is, let alone if there are females.

It's not that I'm trying to "win" here, it's just, you admit you're not that familiar with Star Wars, so what are you basing your position on?Gomess wrote:Ok, I just tried to point out how both our positions were equally valid, but you're still determined to "win," so... I'm done.
Most of my jobs have dealt with customer service and I was trained to be a teacher, so of course I work with the public. And seriously, who hasn't at least seen Star Wars? I know people who hate anything science fiction related, but still enjoyed the Star Wars films. And they know enough about it to know Jedi and Sith are women.Onslaught Six wrote:Man, Sparky, you must not work with the public or...any amount of people who aren't entirely fucking nerds.
I think you'd be surprised in the range of Star Wars fans. One does not have to be a nerd to read the Star Wars novels. And again, there is a lot more Star Wars media out there than just the novels.Normal people don't read Star Wars novels. Nerds do. Are there a large population of nerds who read Star Wars novels? Absolutely. Does that mean jack shit to the public consciousness? Probably not.

My girlfriend hadn't seen any of the series besides parts of Episode 3 at a friend's house until after we started dating. (I said, "This will not do!" and promptly crash coursed her.)Sparky Prime wrote:And seriously, who hasn't at least seen Star Wars?
