New Drift TPB

The modern comics universe has had such a different take on G1, one that's significantly represented by the Generations toys, so they share a forum. A modern take on a Real Cybertronian Hero. Currently starring Generations toys, IDW "The Transformers" comics, MTMTE, TF vs GI Joe, and Windblade. Oh wait, and now Skybound, wheee!

Drift is being introduced into G1 long after '84. That is a problem for some people.
It also has to do with the fact that he comes across as a Marty Stu.
He is not an idealized McCarthy though. That disqualifies him from being a Marty Stu.

The idea of stealth is not negated on Cybertron. (Mind you, that assumes that the only reason to transform is to adopt a disguise.) But, the disguises would be different. There would be more faction switchers and guys turning into terrain. This would be not unlike *real* wars.

Did you just say you wanted new "Rock Lords"? Because that's what it sounds like you said. I'm more amazed that, put like that, Rock Lords would make a degree of sense.

I would like this guy redone if they go that route.

....Anyway, Drift! I don't know a thing about him. I've read the last part of AHM, but don't recall him showing up. The comic that came with the fansproject Drift was pretty funny, though. I seem to recall that people thought he was more of a "Poochie" than a "Marty Stu", which seems more plausible.

EDIT: This guy, too.

Yeah. Some people forget how bad fancharacters can be--and I know, I made one up. It's the origin of my name. Onslaught Six was uberpowerful, depending on how much I felt like him being. His gun could take out a hillside or entire chunks of planets. He had a timetravelling spaceship and he could go to whatever universe he wanted. He picked up Beast Machines Megatron from another universe and rebuilt him into Megabolt for pretty much no reason. He also had an army of Vehicons. That he unleashed in the RID universe.

The only interesting thing I ever did with him was when I made him all old and crippled and he couldn't do any of that stuff anymore. What happens to the omnipotent fancharacter when he's not omnipotent anymore?

Some thoughts from McCarthy about the mini-series, frontpaged.

http://www.tfviews.com/news/comicsandbooks/823
The word is out and it’s all a go. The Drift mini series is on its way.

This is something I’ve been working on over the holidays and it’s been an absolute joy but seeing the artwork coming through has been the highlight. Alex Milne is the artist I’m working with this time around and his pages have been breathtaking. The final page of issue 1? Wow.

Right now I’m wrapping up on issue 4 and bringing the whole story to a close. If Alex has been wowing me so far I’m prepared to be at a loss for words when he hits the final issue.

The mini series, as you would expect, deals with the origins of Drift, how he became a Decepticon and why he eventually decided to leave their ranks. Along the way we’ll be introduced to an exciting new angle to the IDW Transformers universe and learn just what’s up with all of those swords (especially when you could just have a good blaster at your side).

More info to follow. Check it out when it hits shelves.

I'm excited. Regardless of Drift, McCarthy is a writer who 'gets it,' I feel. This *will* have a point to it, regardless of what anyone says. And the biweekly format is often enough that I may actually just pick this up in issues.

I bet the swords will relate to the range of the weapon correlating directly with the average willingness to use it. (In other words, Drift uses the swords because they are psychologically harder to use.)

When is this out? I want it now.

Yeah, I gotta say that that blurb has me honestly excited for this series. At least a character-centric series like this will pull me out of the doldrums that the horribly scripted ending to "Bumblebee" gave me this week. Of course, after this, we go straight into "Ironhide Rebirth" or whatever.

At least the ongoing is starting to pick up for me.

Drift's toy looks nice.
