Masterpiece MP-20 Clarification & Speculation thread.

The originals... ok, not exactly, but the original named "The TransFormers" anyway. Take THAT, Diaclone!
Generation 1, Generation 2 - Removable fists? Check. Unlicensed vehicle modes? Check. Kickass tape deck robot with transforming cassette minions? DOUBLE CHECK!!!

I hadn't looked at it that way, but there really are a lot. MP-10 was released US a year ago, but overseas in 2011. And keep in mind, a lot of those are repaints, and 2 are cassettes.
MP-11 - Coronation Starscream (remold of SS)
MP-14 - Red Alert (remold of other SS ;))
MP-15 - Rumble & Ravage
MP-16 - Frenzy & Buzzsaw
MP-18 - Bluestreak (remold of Prowl)
MP-19 - Smokescreen (remold of Prowl)

I would argue that all of the 1984-85 cast could credibly be made in "Masterpiece" form. (I would not buy many of them. But, the market exists.) And, there are more than a few characters from 86 and later that could be made. (I am personally hoping for, but hardly expecting, "Armada" Optimus Prime.)
I dunno about ALL of that cast, there were deluxe insecticons, some forgettable minibots, deluxe autobots (Whirl & Roadbuster), Reflector... there are some thisses and thats which don't seem like they'd sell, but the majority would.

Gotta run.

Get Henkei Megs. Seriously. I got one when he was current, and I never regretted it. Fixes all the problems of the colour scheme. If I'm not wrong, he's been reissued a few times, too.
Prowl wrote:Well I'm not the biggest fan of that original control art, for one thing. S'what I mean when I say I'm not really the target audience for these things. But specifically, I can't stand his proportions, specifically his legs/feet, being all huge and rhombus-y, made entirely out of flat surface areas. It throws his upper body off balance, which is made worse by how 'long' his hood-chest is, and the shoulders feel too close to the body, and his head seems a bit too small to boot. Like I said, this is all stuff that makes it unappealing to *me*, specifically. You can like it, that's fine, but for whatever reason, looking at that toy actively irritates me.
The way they designed the toy is a deliberate misreading of the original box art. Most of the early G1 box art was drawn in a way that you appeared to be looking up at the robots, the way you would if they were actually in front of you, life-size. Which makes sense--you really want to sell the idea that these guys are fucking huge. But designing the toy to follow that exactly is...not great.
I would kill and eat a hobo to get a Masterpiece Ginrai. It would actively stop me from poking around on eBay for an affordable version of the G1 toy. And this is me, not even liking Masterpiece that much! The fact that I think he's got the second-best shot at this thing, after Star Saber, gives me some hope, too.
You can get a God Ginrai reissue--even the US version--for about $200. (I realize that's not really "affordable.") But you're right, I would also kill and eat an orphanage for one.

The G1 Power Master Prime (aka Ginrai) is.....not worth the effort to find. I had the re-issue from about 10 years back. It used the Japanese arm moulding (allowing for retractable fists), and was much better than the US toy. But, it was still not *good*. It was both a brick and a lego-former.

There is arguably a legit need to make a good one.

None of that is false. I had Powermaster Prime when I was a kid, fun for 5 minutes.

Man, you guys are harsh. I grew up with a Powermaster Prime, somehow. I think it was a garage sale find when I was a kid, long before G2 or anything. I unearthed it in a box in the attic during my BW years and was amazed, thinking it was the original G1 Prime. And he filled that role for years for me. He *was* my G1 Prime.

I always found PMOP more inferior to the 1984 Optimus toy. the smaller cab/bot in the PMOP set had less poseabilty & less sculpted details than 1984 optimus.

As a kids toy, it's ok, it's got some fiddle value. But it's not good at moving, posing, being displayed with other Transformers; it's not as sharply sculpted and its features are a little childish. I saw more than a few at Botcon and there is a lot of love lost for that mold right now, apparently everybody seems into the Ginrai version but not the US one and that's IMO because the Ginrai version is rare and Japanese, not because the mold itself is in any way desirable.
