Last Stand of the Wreckers discussion

The modern comics universe has had such a different take on G1, one that's significantly represented by the Generations toys, so they share a forum. A modern take on a Real Cybertronian Hero. Currently starring Generations toys, IDW "The Transformers" comics, MTMTE, TF vs GI Joe, and Windblade. Oh wait, and now Skybound, wheee!

Yeah, I gotta side with Six on this one Dom, Impactor was legitimately awesome.

He led the Wreckers, which places him at the head of a team who is traditionally pretty badass, he was buddies with Emirate Xaaron, and took the bullet for him at the end of Target: 2006 (which was an awesome arc). Then he came back as a zombie in 'City of Fear', and died again taking out a bunch more of Flame's zombies. And now he's back again, and he just blew up a whole damn ship. So yeah, Impactor is awesome.

No. Impactor is not awesome. I like obscure UK characters as much as anyone else. But, being an obscure UK character does not make one aweseom.
Then he came back as a zombie in 'City of Fear', and died again taking out a bunch more of Flame's zombies.
That, right there, explains why Impactor is not awesome. Impactor may not suck. He certainly does not suck as much as Morrison's Crime Syndicate.

But, he ain't, by any reasonable measure, awesome.

Impactor sucks in a kind of hilariously awesome way, though, is the thing. I enjoy Impactor as a joke--he's not just Impactor, he's *every* stupidly awesome UK comics original character ever. Just 'look' at him! He's dumb colours, he's got no visible altmode, and he's got a giant spear for a hand--and he has an ankle holster 'on the side with the spearhand.' I mean, if Impactor were a mainstream comics character, he'd be Cable or some other ridiculously huge, shoulder-padded Liefeldian character with straps all over him. And he works in that context, I think.

I always figured he had some kind of tank form.

Either way, by the logic above, Ambush Bug is the greatest character in all of fiction.

In-house parodies are hardly awesome. Unintentional variants of this are even worse. I am actually tempted to take points off just by virtue of Impactor being in this book. As I understand, he is only one one page of the first issue. Maybe, when I get around to reading it, (likely after issue 2 is out), it will turn out that Impactor is not just a coproma.

It all depends on how the character is written. There are no doubt plenty of readers like me who have never read the character before, so this will be my first impression. I'll be forming my opinion based on how Roche writes him, not by past appearances.

He was not, joking aside, written badly.

My only real gripe is the fact that Impactor has such a following. He is basically a Boba Fett type. He shows up, does some perfuntory stuff and gets jobbed. He is not a bad character.

Last Stand of the Wreckers #2
Another very strong issue, but a lot of it is still setup. The attack on Garrus-9 happens in the last few pages.

The issue is largely an explanation of who Overlord is and what makes him tick. In the distant past, he was one of three 'phase six' bots chosen by Megatron. The others are Sixshot and Black Shadow (whoever that is... time to do more research!). Overlord is less than thrilled by this, and protests. Megatron gives him the 'do it or die' answer. We are left until near the end of the issue to learn Overlord's choice, which we learn when Kup fills Verity in on who Overlord is. He's a deserter who decided that Megatron was welcome to hunt him down and kill him, and he'd be waiting. I appreciate the background on Overlord. Now we know just who the guy is. He's got a motive, and a history.

In the present, Kup and Springer talk with Impactor, who was released from Garrus-9 by Snare, a Decepticon who thinks Overlord's gone to far, and admits that the Decepticons are as much prisoners as the Autobots. Interestingly, Impactor's reputation as a Wrecker is enough to impress even the Decepticon. So everyone's a little scared of Overlord, or at least impressed by him.

A little continuity is tied up here as well. Ultra Magnus was called to Earth by Prowl, and he had intended to take Verity back with him. He takes a shuttle, leaving his ship for the others to use. Verity is having none of it, and remains behind. She's got a whole armored suit, which is what she's been wearing bits and pieces of for the first two issues. She's also got a picture of Hunter, herself and Jimmy in her room, which is a nice detail.

The assult commences, Verity goes down to the planet with the Wreckers, and a fierce firefight is underway. Topspin and Twin Twist have an interesting moment hinting at things to come, and Perceptor feels the urge to shoot someone. The cliffhanger, with Verity having survived the landing only to find Overlord right in front of her, is great. Definitely one of those "how is she going to survive that one?" endings.

Overall: intros are over. Time for some action next time!

She might not.

It did not ship to any stores around here this week. Either way, I said the "hell with it", and cancelled my subscriptions at Comicazi. They should run out some time in April.

I am setting up a new sub at Newbury.

According to Chris Ryall, the truck delivering issues to the Northeast was in a wreck, and the driver badly injured.

""To comics shops in the northeast, the reason why IDW books aren't in your hands today is a horrific accident involving the truck w/our books

The books were all destroyed, the drivers severely injured. The TPBs will be in stores on 2/24, this week's comics on 3/1...

...this is to clear up the various fallacies I've seen online that we have no books out this week. It's actually a very big week for us.

The damaged comics are regrettable but my thoughts are with the truck drivers. Very grim situation."
