Car companies are just stupidly behind on all trends. They still make vehicles without power windows and locks.

My girlfriend's care has a tape deck. We put a cassette in it that has a cord that we hook our MP3 players to. Technology FTW.

Best Buy and Wal-Mart online both have tape players for sale, even if they don't have anything at retail. Considering the hundreds I spent on tapes back in the day, it's probably worth it to spend $40 on a cassette player to try and preserve that music. If that fails, there's always the secondary market as you suggest.

Trying to rip an album from a cassette sounds like an exercise in frustration, to me, especially if it's a concept album with a bunch of segues or an artist who mushes songs together with very little time between them (e.g. NIN or Devin Townsend) so I'd just pirate the album. I paid for it once! Screw that.

Exactly. Best bet would be either piracy or if you really want something that can play them, they do make machines that will play cassettes and can be ripped to a computer. My car is a 2002 and it only had a tape deck, no CD. I have since upgraded with a cd that has an audio jack in front. I plug in my psp with mu music on it. Or my Soundwave mp3 player.

I'd really rather not pirate the music, even if it is something that I already own. I'm talking hundreds of tapes, some of which I might not be able to even find. I think I'd be more frustrated by spending time hunting for the music and downloading it than I would by recording it a tape at a time.

And it doesn't really sound like a frustrating exercise to me. I can easily see myself just sitting at my computer at night like I usually do, just with the music playing in the background while I'm working or surfing or whatever. I think I'd enjoy going through all the music I have that I haven't listened to in years.

Well, for me, I'm thinking of the logistics of recording the entire tape, cutting the songs at the precise moments, exporting those to MP3s, and then 'tagging' all of those *by hand.* That'd be hella annoying.

True, and I might change my mind halfway through this whole endeavor.

I mean, I have enough problems ripping CDs I've legitimately bought without having to deal with crappy format problems and stuff like that.

Anyway, to bring it back a little, today I've been listening to This Place Is Haunted. They're a video game cover band! And they do obscure stuff. Their new CD includes two medleys of Disney songs (including 'Prince Ali!' Fuck yes!) and old TV themes that they haven't done before, including Ren & Stimpy! Plus this old CD of theirs has them covering the Shredder Suite from the first TMNT film. And their bassist plays an 8-string bass and is generally a bro. This band rules.
