Not really; we know as of...the end of Empire? That Obi-Wan trained Anakin and that Anakin is Darth Vader. Obviously he was a good guy before, that's why it's such a shock--Anakin is built up to be this awesome force of good who hung out with Obi-Wan in the Clone Wars and kicked so much ass that only Darth Fucking Vader could kill him. (In theory.)
...And, really, Darth Vader created C3P0? Does this never come to anything?!
I don't know what's worse, that he created Threepio or that Threepio *doesn't fucking remember.* I get it, he's a robot, but nobody ever mentions erasing his memories or anything.

I think there was actually a pretty good comic made that had Vader finding the disembodied head of 'threepio during the Cloud City segment, and reflecting on the wasted potential of his childhood and his failure to live up to the responsibility of 'creating' something. It might have been a fan-work though (still pretty cool!).
I'm pretty sure that was (at one time) official.
I can just imagine a prequel to.. like.. The Man with the Golden Gun. That shows how Christopher Lee's character actually just had a Really Tough Childhood being abused by his stepfather (WHO HAS A GOLD LIGHTER, GET IT??) for having a third nipple.
Didn't this exact sort of thing come up in the comics thread while talking about the Watchmen prequels that led into me reviving this thread to talk about Star Wars? Circuitous!
Yes, it did! G, make up your damn mind!

See, in G's example, that's a Bad Prequel. But prequels can be good! Look at The Protomen's Act II, for example, which is a prequel to, um, Act I. Some say it's better than the first album! (In many ways, it is.)

Jimmy smits says it at the end of III. "Have the protocol droid's mind wiped." C3PO: "Oh... dear."

You're oversimplifying a bit. You've watched old kung fu movies, right? The revelation that Obi-Wan trained Darth Vader doesn't mean Vader was a Good Guy, but it does make the audience wonder why he serves the Empire. Those are two totally different things, in storytelling terms. And the problem with explicitly showing what led Vader to serve the Empire onscreen is that... it can't possibly match up to the hazy half-formed ideas and gut feelings the audience has inside them. And judging by what everyone I know thinks of the prequels, it didn't.

Hey, I just remembered Yoda said there's only ever two Sith at once; a master and an apprentice. So who was Darth Maul's master? He didn't seem grown up enough to have an apprentice of his own. And what about Darth Scarama-- I mean Darth Tyrannus? Was *he* Darth Maul's master?

Darth Sidious (AKA Emperor Palpatine) was master for both Maul and Tyrannus. The real question is if Count Dooku (Tyrannus) had turned to the dark side presumably before Episode I, and we have Darth Maul in Episode I, then were there technically two apprentices? Or was Dooku just out there as a random "Dark Jedi" before officially becoming Palpy's apprentice?

I like the fact there's only ever two Sith, but it's clear that depth wasn't at the top of the agenda when they created Maul and Tyrannus.

I'm assumign what *was* at the top of the agenda was Ray Park Can Fight With A Stick and Christopher Lee Is In Star Wars Just Like Peter Cushing Was. Both very important points.

Didn't Darth Maul just have *one* line?

Something along the lines of "*hiss* *snarl*"

I seriously don't think Darth Maul can talk.

Dooku didn't turn until Maul was dead, presumably.

Wait, was it really supposed to be that there are only ever two Sith in the whole universe? I always interpreted the line to mean that there were more than a few Sith out there, they just always came in pairs.

Besides, Dooku had an apprentice, that Asaaj Ventress chick from Clone Wars.

Maybe that was the intent of the original line, but expanded materials have made it pretty damn clear there were only ever two at any one time. Seriously, name a point where there are ever any two Sith at once, when one of them isn't assumed to be dead even though he isn't (Maul) or a complete secret (Starkiller).
