Their plan wasn't to destroy the universe. You're misreading the story if that's what you're getting out of it.
That wasn't what they thought they were doing perhaps, but it was the practical end result. Which is why I've said that they may as well have let Nekron win, or let the Anti Monitor win. The end result would have been the same. A universe devoid of life as we know it.

No, that wouldn't be the same thing at all. The Third Army was still living creatures, they just had no will of their own. And from what we saw, they only targeted intelligent life forms, leaving everything else alone. So the universe would still have plenty of life in it. Nekron and the Anti-Monitor on the other hand were trying to wipe out the existence of the universe itself, leaving absolutely nothing. Again, you're mis-reading the storyline if the conclusion you're coming to is that it's the same end result. It isn't.

Technically, sure, you'd be correct. But in practical terms, the difference between a dead universe and one in which every formerly sapient creature is a mindless lump of flesh isn't all that different. No love, no laughter, no art or literature, no invention, no civilization. One wonders what the point of the Third Army creatures would have been once they'd converted everyone in the universe. What would their purpose have been? To serve the Guardians presumably, but what would the Guardians do with all those servants? Do they really need trillions upon trillions of zombies to run a few errands? What would the majority of these Third Army things have been doing other than sitting around waiting for instructions?

So yes, technically the universe would still be inhabited by living creatures. But in terms of all the things that make life worth living, the universe would be dead. Guardians excepted, of course. The six of them that were left would have a grand old time, I'm sure.

I don't agree it wouldn't be all that different from a dead universe. It would be different from a universe as it is, certainly, but we have no idea what the Guardians had in mind after they'd converted the universe into their Third Army. And again, the Third Army only targeted intelligent forms of life. So there would be other forms of life still out there in the universe, still evolving. Whose to say what the future would hold?

Now that is the questions to be asking.

But... who is making those pizzas?!? The Guardians aren't thinking this through!!!

Maybe that's Ganthet's new job. Eternal pizza maker. And the other Guardians are all too lazy to go and pick them up, so they send the Third Army to do it. Hah, we've worked out their fiendish plan.

And as a bonus, the kids will never run on their lawn again.

Considering the Third Army doesn't have mouths or needs to eat or breath, I don't think they're going out for pizza... :P

At last, the true purpose behind the Third Army revealed!

Well, glad I could clear all that up

I'm assuming the Third Army still has hands right? So that means that they could also make the pizzas! That's it, those are the errands the Guardians need them to do after the universe is done, make pizza and deliver it. And in 30 minutes or less. After all, eliminating free will from the universe is a lot of work and they're bound to be hungry afterwards.
