This is the advantage you *all* seem to have over me, and my main concern is holding things up out of ignorance. I'm actually surprised that I'm the only one here who doesn't know anything about D&D or whathaveyou. It'd be ok if I felt someone else was in my boat! =p
...Ursus, are you implying Dom's fanfic is excellent enough that it'll assuage all my doubts? HMMMM
Sorry, I just can't get over the fact Dom is basically writing fanfic right before my eyes.

Granted this was some years ago, but I really liked some of Dom's old fanfic. I have no idea how I would rate it now.
As afar as rules before story go, the rules are the "physics" of the world. They're how the world functions, and interacts with itself. Without physics, nothing can function enough to have a story in the first place.

Sure, but put yourself in my neophyte shoes. Seeing people discussing "saving rolls" and "damage quantifiers" (these are phrases I have half-made up based on my ignorance) when you still don't know what flipping planet they're talking about is a bit overwhelming.
But, like I said, I'm gonna be patient! If only because I'm looking forward to reading (and critiquing) Dom's fanfic.

I am tempted to modify one of my recent custom figures to reference one of the stories that HOney Bear liked, but...probably ain't gonna do it. (Hey, remember when I used to print out volumes of fanfic from the internet and would leave them for you to find? And, you would read them out of curiosity, and be sorry for it? And, then, you got even with me by making an eggy belch in the stock room at work? Oh, good times.)

The basic idea is that dice rolls and character stats interact to determine the outcomes of certain actions and events. In soe cases, variables like terrain (paved roads, rain slicked roads, zero or light gravity) can influence events. The better a character's stats, the more likely a dice roll is to go well (or at least not as badly) for them.

-should probably got to that paper work now...

Dom has made it quite clear we'll be on (some iteration of) Earth.
That said: Making the game mechanics is indeed the most important at this point. That's what makes or breaks this. Setting and stuff like that is always less important in tabletop because a lot of it is so fluid. There are DMs who just pull shit out of their ass when they need to.

That's because you would print out terrible fanfic on purpose. God, and the time you got me to watch Sgt. Savage? Because you told me it was "really good?" Really GOOD?!"
*fume*

I can still taste it. That was just...just awful.

Err, when? Every time he mentions Earth he follows it up with "...among other planets..." like I won't notice. =p
