In this case, IDW admits that this is not going to stick, more or less in the same breath that they say how important it is.....
I dunno why, but I feel like Optimus Prime is not going to literally die. It sounds like, to me, it'll be a metaphorical or philosophical death. The death of Optimus Prime as a personality, as a symbol. Prime will have to change his ways and how he operates.
And, in case anybody has figured it out, this is the first time we have all agreed about a comic in....possibly ever. Sparky, Mako, O6, myself. Where the hell is Prowl? We need to get him in on this.
Granted, I haven't read it yet (because it isn't out) so they still have a chance to surprise me. Remember, Galvatron not being Megatron was frowned upon. You yourself say the ongoing was, at first, doubtful.
At this point, my priority is to pack up Sunstreaker and Drift before the next issue comes out. Seriously, I do not want those toys ruined by association.
You have a very strange obsession with this.

I would love to live in a world where I could believe for a second that such a concept had crossed the mind of anyone paid to write Transformers comics.
I'm gonna reread Marvel G1. At least that has the excuse of being a toy and cartoon tie-in.

Give Roberts credit. Read the solicit.

Solicits mean nothiiiiing
*nooothiiiiiiing*
I shouldn't have said "crossed the mind", though. I mean I don't believe that will happen. And as such, the solicit is irrelevant, 'cos it's just marketing spiel.

Roberts is a good writer. He proved that with "Last Stand of the Wreckers".
But, and not for the first time, IDW is making real demands on the credulity of readers.
-big stupid event
-followed by gimmicked legacy numbering
-followed by renumbering
-and splitting of the title
These are things that many readers avoid.
I want to give Roberts and Barber credit. But, there is little reason to at the moment. "Chaos" is yet another faux-event in an industry full of them.

You're right! I feel like we should mark this event somehow. There needs to be a party or something.

As much as I like Roberts (Barber I'm less familiar with), I don't feel any desire to pick up anything set in IDW's universe. And sadly, at this point, I'm so sick of the constant rebooting of the G1 universe, that I'd be unlikely to pick up yet another #1 issue, where all the characters and their war have to be reintroduced again. I'm sure Roberts will do fine in the head writer position, but he's stuck writing in the post-ongoing setting where everything is a jumbled mess.

I will give the two ongoings about 6 months before I make a decision. But, the lead up is not filling me with optimism.
IDW is making text book mistakes with the franchise. (And, does anybody really think that the market can sustain 2, never mind 3, ongoing TF titles?)

Oh, that's what this topic was about. I need to check these things out sooner.

I'm gonna be more bold than I probably should be here and say that I'm not quite sure why everyone hates this so much. Is 'Decepti-God' a stupid name? Sure, but it seems to be a placeholder for something that won't actually be named on-page more than anything else. I think the actual idea is pretty aces. It's a suitably epic idea for what's supposed to be an epic story (though I'll agree that the execution on that front hasn't exactly been sound), and damn if the art doesn't convey it well (I clicked on Dom's second link there and the first thing I thought was "Oh, awesome!"). It makes sense, Galvatron's got this big mess of Sweeps, he wants to get rid of the Autobots so he can finish his plan or whatever, and we've already seen that Sweeps by themselves are capable of being one-shotted by guys like Wheelie (!), so he sticks 'em all together so they're a bigger threat. Now, if this thing turns out to be your bog-standard slow, unwieldy Gestalt Transformer, then I'll be disappointed. But if it actually comes across as the (literally) massive threat it's supposed to represent, something that actually makes the Autobots look up and go "Oh shit, what're we gonna do now?", that even Megatron realizes he has to fight against without having a certain chance, then it'll be pretty much what I liked about what I saw in that initial image. Either way, it's a cool idea in my book, especially because it's something we haven't ever seen in TF before. At least, as far as silly comic plot-things go, it's better than a magic eyeball that can answer any question, or zombies from another comic book series infecting robots.
I'm with O6 in hoping that "The Death of Optimus Prime" is a more metaphorical title, but considering IDW seemed content to spoil the shit out of the rest of the 'event' at this Q&A (Seriously, do they want people to actually read these comics, or did they always plan to tell us how everything ends with only like three issues out?), I'm not holding my breath.
Side note: The people asking the questions at that thing sound like a bunch of fucking idiots. They seriously asked if these were in the same continuity as the live-action movies? And acted surprised at the notion of killing off Optimus Prime, despite the fact that he dies every other Tuesday? And don't give me that "They're just regular reporters" excuse; when you're a reporter, you're goddamn job is to do a little research before you go to something like this, so you can ask questions anyone might actually care about, as opposed to something you could've found in three seconds with a Google search.

On the bright side, at least IDW managed to surprise someone by killing off Prime.
I can forgive the reporters for not knowing the long history of Transformers and that Prime dying is a common event, but the whole world saw RotF in theaters just a couple years ago. Prime died pretty dramatically in that. And if they thought that the ongoing was set in the movie universe, one of their questions should've been, "Why are you killing Optimus again?" I seriously do hope that his death is a metaphorical one. That's the only way this could possibly escape being a gimmick. One of the running themes throughout the ongoing (also mentioned in AHM) was how the Autobots were losing their way and becoming more and more like Decepticons. So a metaphorical death of Prime and all his ideals and values could work.

And it would also hold with what Megatron said in like issue 14 or so when he told Prime: "I'm not going to kill you. I'm going to destroy you. And when I'm done you'll know the difference."
