Dex-Starr the Rage Kitty is purely awesome. It's refreshing to see an ordinary house cat wearing a ring rather than some alien cat that happens to look like an Earth cat. I also really like how the Red Lanterns have been portrayed as being so full of Rage because they lost someone they care about. It shows a different side to them than the blind rage their rings tend to cover up.

I just dislike seeing kewl pop-culture memes foisted into comics like this.

As for the morality question you raise Sparky, are any of the Red Lanterns actually evil? Objectively, Atrocitus has ever reason to have it in for the Guardians and derivative groups. I have not read much of GL in recent years, (believe it or not), but I do not recall the Red guys going after anyone who would not be a legit target if one follows the "masks/capes/uniforms make you a target" rule.

This does not annoy me anywhere near as much as "We 3". Johns writes vapid filler, but he lacks the mind-blowing hypocrisy of Morrison when it comes to animals.

Doesn't sound like that's the case though. I mean, how is someone supposed to write dialogue for a pissed off house cat? It'd be hard to do it realistically without sounding Lolcatish. Lolcatty. Like a Lolcat. Whatever. I still like the idea of an abused animal getting revenge.

Oh c'mon. Now you're just picking a fight.

I'm supposed to believe that a power ring can allow all sorts of humans and aliens to fly, fight, be protected from damage and travel through space, but having a ring like that upgrade a housecat's intelligence is a bridge too far? I don't think so.

Yes. This. I don't really have a problem with alien animals looking like Earth animals at all, but it's been done enough that it's expected. Dex being a regular kitty is definitely a more novel approach.

I mean, that's been done, too, but not nearly as often. And especially in the context of the GL books, where we've already had sentient alien trees, dogs, squirrels, and insects.

Sure. Plus, who's to say that it's upgrading his intelligence? Translating his thoughts, maybe, helping him focus on finding the object of his rage or something, sure. But I don't recall anything in that story saying the ring was making him smarter.

What I'm wondering about more is why the kitty's blue. Not complaining about it, mind, but I mean...he's totally blue.

I don't see that Dex-Starr is supposed to be a pop-culture meme actually... He was chosen to bear a Red ring like any other Red Lantern. He just happens to be an ordinary house cat instead of a human or some type of alien.

Well no, the origins we've seen for Red Lanterns so far pretty much involves them having lost someone, making them angry enough that a Red ring chooses them. So they aren't evil. But the thing you have to keep in mind about Red Lantern, the Red rings literally blinds them with rage, making them hard to control and highly unpredictable. Although they may not intend to harm someone who isn't one of their legit targets, it's still highly likely they could attack anyone who might cross their path due to their over-abundance of rage.

Minor bit about OMD here. Apparently, JMS actually had a whole outline written for what was supposed to be canon and not-canon for the post-OMD continuity, answering a lot of those questions we were having (re: MJ pregnant etc.) but the guys above him were all, "Fuck that, it's magic, we don't have to explain it." So, points, I guess.

People spend so much time worrying about whether a figure is "mint" or not that they never stop to consider other flavours.

Atrocitus kills people and uses their blood and bones to 'divine' answers from 'the universe', or whatever. Killing innocents seems evil enough to me. I don't dispute that they have a legitimate grievance with the Guardians, but that doesn't excuse his behavior.

That is what I was asking. If the Red Lanterns are just randomly killing other-wise non-involved parties, that is out of order. But, if they generally limited their attacks to guys wearing masks and capes, that would be a different question.
