Very little of which probably will mean anything to you since you don't watch.
You'd be surprised how much of this shit I comprehend despite not watching the show.

The sad thing is, I'm almost mildly interested in the show as a concept and all...but the legions of fandom bullshit everywhere telling me how "great" it is has completely turned me off ever wanting to see it. Like Firefly.

Probably not gonna happen, but what if Hit's Doctor takes a new name. Something like, say, Valeyard?
This is about the era in the Doctor's life that guy was supposed to be from, right?
Spoiler
The Valeyard did get name-checked by the Great Intelligence
. He hasn't been forgotten about.

I hear ya there, I have that with Avatar: The Last Airbender with some of my friends.

That's the worst, I've done that too only to realize my peril later. I'm a fan of Firefly, but embarrassed by some of the fan bullshit you mentioned. Just like I argued in the comics threads, enjoy something for what it is, the meta stuff is, at most, secondary and, at best, worth ignoring.

TV.com posted this article about fixing Doctor Who, and I thought it was pretty solid: http://www.tv.com/news/matt-smith-leavi ... 044943293/

There are some decent points in that article. Moffat wrote some of the best episodes of the show, until he took over as showrunner. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances and Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead are a couple of my favorites from the RTD era.

After he took over he still turned out some good ideas and stories, but I think that idea that some of his plots are over complicated is fair enough, as is the assertion that he never quite explains everything. I still don't know how the Silence made the TARDIS explode and destroy the universe, for example. If it was the Silence, something that still hasn't quite been confirmed. He has some great ideas, but I think he's been stretched too thin. I can understand it has to be tough to turn out that much story and dialogue in such a short time. There are plenty of writers out there, there's no reason one person has to write half the episodes every year.

And yeah, I absolutely miss cliffhangers.

I miss endings that aren't just kicked out the door in the last 10 minutes, and I miss character development. ;)

Just finished watching most of season 7 part 2, and I have to say that I still like Matt Smith's 11th Doctor, and I like the character of Clara more than I expected to, and most of the stories were also more enjoyable than I thought they'd be, given the general negative vibe I'd picked up about this season. The second half of the season was a considerable improvement over the first half. Nice to finally see the Ice Warriors again, as well as the Mondasian Cybermen since I've never liked or understood the need to create the alternate universe Cybus version. And it was fun to see all the Doctors in the final episode via past footage and out of focus doubles, though it does remind me just how much more I love the old episodes than the current ones. Troughton still makes me laugh just by running, and it's fun to see Hartnell's Doctor actually stealing the TARDIS. And surely the eighth Doctor's "blink and you'll miss him" appearance is an inside joke referring to the fact that McGann only got a single episode compared to all the other actors. The setup for the 50th with the previously unknown regeneration of the Doctor does look interesting.

But despite all of that, and despite the fact that I like Matt Smith, I'm ready for someone new. Troughton was right, three years seems to be just about the right length for an actor to stick with the part... though I'll gladly make an exception for Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, two of my favorites.

Tennant ran over 4 years and I could have still used another. I could have used at least 2 years of Eccleston. So I think it shouldn't be a rule, it should be whatever the actor and the material feel right about.

Speaking of Tennant, he won a Daytime Emmy for his role as Huyang, the ancient professor droid that taught Jedi padawans how to build their lightsabers on Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

An informal standard then. :)

I'm with you on Eccleston, but I was done with Tennant. Definitely ready to move on. Though that may have had more to do with the stories and writing then Tennant, so it may have been worth seeing him stick around for a year with Moffat at the helm just to see how different things felt. It might have turned out like Tom Baker's final year and the major change in tone from Williams to Nathan-Turner. Could have been good.

Good for him!

Tennant's last "season" was 4 mini-movies, all of which struggled to get it right, and took 18 months to slog through. I forgot about that, it definitely took things down a notch.

It was well deserved too, I really fell hard for his performance there, he embodies that Star Wars magic in that first episode of his so perfectly, so effortlessly, he's just magic and science without being a retread of The Doctor.

50th anniversary episode: all we're getting is Smith and Tennant, with John Hurt as a previously unknown Doctor? I'm going to be disappointed if the older Doctors aren't included in some way. Yeah, they don't look like they did 30 years ago, but give them a vocal role or something. And they may be in the episode, it's not like everything about it has been revealed. But it's hardly a 50th anniversary celebration if all we get are characters from 2006 to the present.

It is amusing that Matt Smith has to wear a wig for his last episode since he shaved his head for a movie. Ask Paul McGann how he feels about wigs.
