That was hilarious O6! Hey, is this the same guy that did that Mega Man video you posted a while ago? Cause that was hilarious too.

I also didn't know who Raksha or Mcipher or anyone really. Indeed the way of sans internet is the way of peace.

I don't know, what did I post? I can't think of any Mega Man-related AVGN stuff off the top of my head, but whatever. (Dude's got a lot of stuff.)

But yeah, you see why people would be interested in this. The reason these guys have the kind of term "video reviewer" is that theh original AVGN episodes were kind of playing off that idea--you're expecting there to be some kind of straightforward review of the game, but it's terrible and he just picks it apart and rages at it instead of giving you an actual opinion. Most of the very first AVGN reviews tended to end with him going, 'If you want my advice, just don't play it, because it sucks shit.' These eventually became way more profanity-filled and tirade-like until he finally just started going "This game sucks turds out of a straw" or whatever. This kind of thing worked with AVGN because he never really looks like he's trying too hard to do it. A lot of the other "video reviewer" type people on the Internet just ape this dude's schtick, and badly.

Most people aren't really interested in James' opinion of real things, except during Halloween he always does a big marathon of quick (5-10 minute) reviews of old horror movies where he just talks about cool stuff in the movie and why it's historically significant.

Also, this is a tirade, but the above kind of led me into thinking about what you said--you don't review things because you seem to think that "nobody cares about my opinion, because it's not any better or worse than anybody else's." And I personally kind of think that's bullshit. Not necessarily that your opinion can somehow be "better" or "worse" than mine, but...everybody's an individual, and by reading a lot of what people say about things they like kind of gives you an idea of whhat kind of person they are, and why they like the things they like.

For example, any toy that has a chaingun pretty much gets an automatic thumbs up from me. By getting to know me, you'd learn that I like chainguns, and anything that involves chainguns for me is instantly cool. If you also like chainguns, you might be inclined to listen to what I have to say, because we have similar likes. I've never pushed a review out to try and be, like, an authority on things, but just to give my thoughts on a thing that I like. If you know someone well enough, you start to kind of trust their opinion. If they like the same things you like, and dislike the same things you like, (broadly), then you can assume that new things that that person likes or dislikes will also be things 'you' like or dislike.
I also didn't know who Raksha or Mcipher or anyone really. Indeed the way of sans internet is the way of peace.
M Sipher is at least worth knowing about because he's a notable fan who eventually went on to write official stuff.

I think he's probably referring to the 'Megaman, Megaman!' thing, in which case that would be Egoraptor, not AVGN. Egoraptor's less 'reviews' and more surreal/funny web animations and those Sequelitis things recently that are awesome but he doesn't make enough of them fast enough.

Me neither, Let's Plays are not worth my time. I'd much rather, y'know, play the damn game myself.

Damn. You actually make a pretty good point. Come to think of it, that's how I came to get MODOK's 11. Scourge said it was awesome and I know he and I tend to like the same stuff so I got and also thought it was awesome. So I guess maybe I just went in reverse. Like, I already know you guys so when you guys review stuff I know whether or not I'll like it. Like, I know from posting on here that if I buy Jazz and he has wings Prowl probably won't like it. Or at least that part of it.

Ok, so I guess I'll start posting more reviews of stuff. That way, you guys will get to know me better.

Rolfe's older reviews were better. He found real problems with the games and complained about them using the most extreme profanity that he could come up with. The validity of the complaints made the reviews funnier. And, O6 is right that the fact that Rolfe did not look like he was trying also helped. (The later episodes, with higher production values, are "missing" something.)

His later reviews come down to "the game is hard and sucks". Linkara is even more predictable and self-indulgent.
This is why it always annoys me when I see someone's career listed as "blogger". Really? Someone actually pays you for that shit? How the hell do I sign up for that? Cause I'd love to get paid enough money to live on to post my fucking opinion to the internet. Ugh. Sometimes I hate living in the future.

Dammit Six, look what you diiiiiiiiid!!

Incidentally, this is how I feel about most CollegeHumor videos (save Picnicface's stuff), and I've never been able to really properly articulate it.

Yeah, he also needs to indulge in some speech practice, and better production values could actually help him, I think.

Indeed. Linkara himself is part of a larger site dedicated to these types of things that basically makes up a whole 'network', that does business with advertisers and the like as such.

What's there to misunderstand? People in the throes of socially-restrictive nerdery generally sport unshorn neck-beards, a sign of poor personal hygiene and/or grooming.

Except for Thew. That guy *rocks* it. (Thew remains the only video toy reviewer I will alot any time for.)

I dunno. I just do not understand how the term took root. If nothing else, it is not like being an arse means one has a neck-beard. I dunno. It just seems that there could be a better term.

The problem with Linkara is that it is very much about him as a character, and the character is clearly "a work". In contrast, early AVGN episodes were played off as "crazy man and his games", and were about the games more than the host. The production values were a flavor question.

For Linkara, higher production values would likely just mean "more about him".
