Bwuh? I don't pretend to know *everything* about Spider-Man, but weren't mechanical web-shooters what was behind Spidey's web-shooting in the vast majority of the comics? I know that (naturally) they gave him organic webbing around the time the first movie came out (as part of that ridiculous-sounding 'The Other' storyline, I think), but I was under the impression that pretty much everything before that, including his original stories and most of the media based on them, had him with mechanical web-shooters. Mostly so you could have cheap thrills when he was slinging through town or something and "Oh no, out of web-fluid!" and he'd have to change cartridges mid-air or risk becoming street pizza.

I haven't seem ASM yet, but wanted to on the basis that it seemed like this Spidey was more appropriately wise-crack-y than MacGuire's mopey interpretation. Any truth to that?

Yes. In a way, AmSpidey is truer to the original comics than the Raimi films were. (I also recall there being a plot point that Spidey's original web fluid couldn't hold Venom because he was too strong, and he had to mix up a stronger, thicker batch. Probably needed help from someone to do it, too, like that scientist chick he hung out with in the cartoon.)

Yes! That's the other great thing, Spidey is just about full-on dick in this, and not just when he's in the costume. (He redeems himself later on for those dick moves he pulls out of costume. It's kind of a big deal.

) There's this bit where he's staking out the sewers to take pictures of Lizard and he's just sitting back in a web fucking around on his phone. It's pretty hilarious to see that kind of apathetic slacker jackass as Spiderman--in a good way! (When written right, Spiderman is the biggest dick in the Marvel universe.)

Also, I completely forgot, but Denis Leary as Capt. Stacey is awesome and hilarious, and makes up for whatever loss you're inevitably feeling because J. Jonah Jameson isn't in the movie. It is definitely worth a rental; I paid to see it at the drive-in with something else (I think MIB3 which was also surprisingly awesome!) for like $7 and I felt like I got my money's worth. Or, you know, if renting isn't your thing, pirate it. Whatever.

But yeah, he's great. A serious true-to-form Spidey. Garfield plays him way better than you'd expect the guy to. Literally my only complaint is that sometimes as Peter Parker he just doesn't 'look' the part. He acts like it, sure, but it's just...something's not right about it. (I think it's his hair. It's too nice.) Physically he's got it down, I mean, like...body-wise. It's just his face and the way they do his hair and clothes. He dresses too hipstery to be a nerd. With his big-ass hipster glasses and shit. (Also, unlike the Raimi Spiderman movies, I don't think he gets "super vision" when he gets bit; he doesn't suddenly look out of his glasses and they're blurry.) If I have one more complaint it's that I think he takes his mask off a little too much--wondering if contractual shit was the culprit or something. It's like, okay, there's this one bit where Lizard is chasing him through his school (or he's chasing Lizard--I forget) and it's not like his identity is public knowledge or Lizard knows who he is. He turns a corner and sees that Lizard isn't around so he...takes his mask off so he can keep going? Why? That's really dumb! Anyone can see you, dude! But it's a pretty minor complaint in the bigger scope, so.

I did really like his characterization and I also have to agree with you about his "look". It does feel wrong. And he seems to confident. But yeah, I like that he's a dick. Like the scene where he catches the car theif. Perfect. And Dennis Leary instantly makes any movie better.

Paint and patience, along with TrU "import" Wheelie, yielded.....TFU style TFA Longarm/Shockwave.

On the way to SPW (Showcase Professional Wrestling) in RI last night, we stopped at the Woonsocket Walgreens. (It is not unusual to stop there on the way back, before the guys I ride with go to Burger King for a late night dinner. But, one of them had to patch up and glove a small wound on his hand before the show.) And....I found Kre-O blind packs.

First Transformers purchase in some time today. I got the Transformers Prime "One Shall Stand" movie compilation DVD. Target seems to have kept the entire first season on their shelves for all of five minutes, or I"d have bought that instead.

And I’d been thinking I’d have to wait for the toy aisle Christmas reset for the Voyagers I wanted to show up! But just a week after I found Thundertron at retail (and having seen several more of him since then), I came across an Ultra Magnus this weekend. I wasn’t as enthused at the prospect of him as I was Thundertron, but I had interest nonetheless. And indeed, he’s a solid figure (like the other PRID Voyagers I’ve gotten). Much fuss is made about the hammer, but I actually prefer it in its big, Liefieldian gun mode. The green light is nice too, how come Thundertron didn’t get one of those (he’s stuck with a boring ol’ red one)? The shoulders are definitely a bit weak, they really needed bigger ball joints (or thicker struts in general) to work the way they want them too, it’s the one design flaw in an otherwise solid design. The way panels wrap around both his arms and legs to make everything thick and solid is a nice design choice, and gives the transformation enough foldy embellishment to not be boring despite being your standard ‘lay robot down and wrap vehicle bits around him’ scheme. The bevy of weapon-mounting options for his vehicle mode is a boon to that form as well. If there’s one thing I wish he had, it’d be another of the rocket he comes with. That way he could achieve Geewun-ish symmetry with them mounted on his shoulders, or you could really load the gun up with extra armaments. Maybe a few years down the line, when PRID Ultra Magnuses are getting parted out on eBay, I’ll see about picking up a spare. Otherwise, this is a great figure. Not as novel or interesting as Thundertron, but a solid TF toy anyway.

Also bought/downloaded God Hand on PSN, this being that game that lets you feel like ‘The Fist of the motherfucking North Star fuck yeah!’. And yeah, it pretty much does. Awesome combat system, and the presentation of it all reeks of late 80’s/early 90’s Shonen fighting manime like Fist of the North Star and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, it’s great. It being a Capcom game, it does get ball-bustingly hard at times, but it’s in an enjoyable, feel-yourself-actually-getting-better-little-by-little way, rather than anything cheap; it’s motivating, and just an absolute blast to play.

Actually went to Toys R Us Saturday looking for MP Prime. I don't really know why. But, while I was there, I found the GDO Deluxes and the Bludgeon repaint g2esque Megatron. And the legends scale figures. I passed on Megs but I did like the head design and I did pick up the legends. Got Thundercracker, Hoist, and Bluestreak (x2, one for customizing). Also picked up some He-Man dvds. After that, went to Toy Fusion and swapped the MOTUC Dekker from this month's sub along with Animated Starscream for MOTUC Queen Marlena and Prince Adam. This months figure that I kept was King Randor so that kinda rounds out my Eternian royal family. Sort of. I still need an Adora, but she hardly spent any time on Eternia anyway.

Yeah fair enough. I really just want an Optimus Prime to go with my Classics, but I suppose I could just go with the actual Classics. I just thought that if Classics Prime with a trailer was gonna cost about the same amount as the smaller-than-MP01 Prime that I might as well get that one at retail. Anyway, thanks for the reminder.
