I was thinking it might have, as you were saying the main character being a serial killer would prepare him for a career in politics. It sounded like the study from a few years back that illustrated the similarities between being a CEO and a criminal. (Both fields reward aggression and creativity.)

No, basically, magic, in this universe, gives you a horrible, debilitating disease similar to cancer. My character hung out with a bunch of annoying goth kids and contracted it and, thinking he was going to die, murdered them all. Then he was grafted with replacement, magically powered cybernetic organs to keep him alive, and he has continued murdering wizards in secret.
