Look at the CBS schedule compared to every other network, they are the most reticent to put on anything remotely sci-fi compared to their rivals, the closest thing they had was Supergirl last year, which made more ratings than shows they kept but they canceled it anyway only to be rescued by The CW (which they co-own with Warner Bros). They clearly don't believe it has a place on TV, yet network, cable, premium, and internet portals all say otherwise because they keep producing sci-fi without issue. CBS getting the rights to Star Trek was such a big mistake for Paramount. They have no vision.

See, that one's a camcorder, that one's a camera, that one's a phone, and they're doing "Speak no evil, See no evil, Hear no evil", get it?

Star Trek's Youtube channel has released a First Look Trailer of Discovery.

The ship, which apparently is not the Discovery but another ship called the Shenzhou, looks way too advanced for a series taking place 10 years before Kirk's time on the Enterprise. I mean, I do like the visuals of it, but it looks more like a 24th century era ship, rather than 23rd. And it has the dumb window viewscreen of the JJverse ships when they've said that this series will take place in the Prime universe.

The uniforms look more like the Enterprise-era uniforms, which again seems wrong with this series taking place only 10 years before Kirk's time on the Enterprise. Their uniforms should look more like something from TOS-era.

The Klingons look absolutely terrible.

The trailer doesn't look all that bad, though it's definitely a new movie aesthetic rather than original timeline. Some of the dialogue is clumsy. And are there any men in this show?

I'm not super excited about the show, but I might watch it at some point and give it a try. And yeah, not liking the Klingon look.

I didn't even bother watching the trailer. With the trainwreck that it is behind the scenes has killed pretty much any interest I had in the show. I was lackluster to this to begin with after the news that it would only be available on their new Netflix wannbe, but between that and the rewrites and... honestly I just don't care anymore. And that's bad. If a hardcore Trek fan like myself doesn't care how on earth do they hope to get any new fans? As far as I'm concerned CBS can live long and suck it.

Plans for Star Trek Discovery at SDCC have been announced also with the release of a new poster giving us a new look at the Discovery.

They put gaps in the saucer section...

I'm curious enough to give the new show a chance, but I'm just uneasy about a lot of the creative choices they've made. I guess time will tell whether it's good quality Star Trek, or a big mess.

I think they're setting it up to fail. I think CBS All Access isn't performing as well as CBS would have hoped, so they're making terrible decisions and mandates on Star Trek so that when it fails they'll be able to blame the failure of All Access on Star Trek and the supposed outrage from complaining fans.

So the first episode of Discovery premiered on CBS last night... And is the only episode that will be on the network. The rest will be on the CBS All Access app, or Netflix outside the United States and Canada.

Unfortunately, I wasn't all the impressed with the first episode. I thought they focused way too much on Commander Michael. I get they want to focus on her character rather than a Captain, but Star Trek has always been about an ensemble cast so it seems odd to see so much attention on just one character like this. We didn't even get introduced to most of the main cast. And for someone who was apparently raised by Vulcans and has 7 years worth of experience on a Starship, she seems way too impulsive and emotional. I'd have found it more believable if she was fresh Starfleet Academy graduate who'd simply had a Vulcan mentor.

And then there is the Klingons, who get a surprising amount of screen time while explaining absolutely nothing. They're trying to unite all 24 houses, and that's about all I got out of it. There's a lot of talk about a Torchbearer and beliefs, but without actually explaining any of it, especially since this is Klingons like we've never seen them before, it all came off as incredibly pointless. They might as well have been an entirely new race and it wouldn't have made any difference.

Overall, I just didn't feel the first episode had enough substance to it.

I forgot it was on. I'm sure not paying to watch in online. I might try it out if it makes its way to DVD down the road.

Newsarama has a thorough review of the episode: https://www.newsarama.com/36582-review- ... world.html

Yeah, same here. Especially since CBS is selling their All Access app just on the new Star Trek, and I thought the first episode could have been so much better.
