Superman's new costume.
Basically it's just a few tweaks to his New52 costume. I like that the yellow belt buckle is back, but everything else just doesn't seem like it wasn't a necessary change to me.

Re: Comics are Awesome III
It's an improvement, but only because it moves ever so slightly back towards the classic costume by fixing the boots and putting some yellow at the waist. I see that as a tacit admission that the red belt on a blue costume just didn't work nearly as well as the classic red, yellow and blue. I still think the high collar makes Superman look stiff and formal, and I have no clue what the sleeves that go over the hands are supposed to be.Sparky Prime wrote:Superman's new costume.

They ought to just give it up and bring back the traditional Superman costume. All these arguments about it being out of fashion are just silly... no one wears blue spandex with a red cape and red boots either, but they kept those.
edit: I like the Outhouse's description as "It’s less of a total redesign than a tweaking of the abomination created by Jim Lee. " Heh.

Green Lantern #39
In a refreshing surprise, the new Guardians actually commend Hal Jordan for the job he did while leading the Green Lantern Corps. I’m so used to seeing Guardians and other Lanterns chew Hal out (and so is he, obviously) that it’s a nice change to see him told that he’s done a good job, and that the Guardians want him to help restore the good name of the Corps, whose image has gone downhill quite a bit. That particular problem is demonstrated when Hal arrests some ore thieves at the start of the issue, and while the local police are glad for the help, they don’t want Hal anywhere near their planet, because they’re convinced that bad things happen when the Corps is around.
There’s also something odd going on in the universe, and characters like Constantine, Raven and Shazam (not the wizard, the former Captain Marvel) feeling it. The Guardians observe it, and determine that they must act. I’m not sure whether this is a lead-in to Convergence or part of the storyline that follows all the creatures being released from the Source Wall. One alien is turned to stone, which makes me guess the latter.
It feels like a page is missing somewhere, however, as one page ends with the Guardians asking Hal to help them restore the image of the Corp, and the next sees him at his locker, pondering either crashing and burning or doing something crazy. I guess one can follow the other, but the transition felt off to me. Still, other than that it’s a good issue, and it’s good to see Hal’s hard work recognized for once.
Batman ’66 #19
Marmaduke Ffogg plans to blanket Gotham City in a thick fog (like good old Londinium, don’t you know) and spend time robbing and looting with the fog as a screen. In addition, the fog makes the good citizens of Gotham believe whatever Ffogg wants them to, so they see Batman and Robin and highwaymen. All of Ffogg’s lackeys are girls, who not only beat up the Gotham police rather handily, but also think that Robin is just dreamy. And of course, Batman and Robin are handicapped because they just can’t hit a girl!! But they still find a way to win, namely by tricking the girls into beating themselves up in the thick fog.

I agree, I don't know why they ever changed the classic costume! What's with this weird diamond shape for the S on the chest? What happened to the good old triangle he had originally? And why is his cape so long nowadays?anderson wrote:They ought to just give it up and bring back the traditional Superman costume. All these arguments about it being out of fashion are just silly...
Facetiousness aside, I'm definitely not a fan of Lee's panelstravaganza for New52, but let's not pretend that Superman's (or any other hero's) costume hasn't been revised and updated dozens of different ways before over the years, to the point that the outfit he was wearing in 2011 was no more the 'classic' look than the one he got in New52. I don't mind a refreshing change from time to time, just so long as the actual result looks...good.

Superman's costume evolved for the first few years until it had a standard look, and despite minor tweaks since the 40s in the S-shield size, cape length, color of the blue, etc., it's remained pretty much the same in all that time. The New 52 changes and this current look are the most major break from the traditional look in probably 70 years. Electric Red and Blue Superman excepted, of course.BWprowl wrote:I agree, I don't know why they ever changed the classic costume! What's with this weird diamond shape for the S on the chest? And his "Metallica" black costume too. Or as I like to call it, the Metallica and Justice For All outfit.andersonh1 wrote:Superman's costume evolved for the first few years until it had a standard look, and despite minor tweaks since the 40s in the S-shield size, cape length, color of the blue, etc., it's remained pretty much the same in all that time. I have a feeling it isn't a bit of nineties comic trivia that is fondly remembered, but I liked the Electric Superman costume. The blue one, anyway. For some reason I thought the red looked awful, but blue was a-ok. It's a shame I didn't like more of the comics in which said suit appeared, though.

Grant Morrison did some nice things with electric Superman in JLA. There was a great scene early in the run where Neron was trying to pull the moon out of orbit, and Superman used his electrical powers to do something with the moon's magnetic field and pull it back into place. The way it was written and drawn made Superman look pretty awesome. And then he shows up on Earth and starts wrestling a fallen angel that had been beating the Martian Manhunter, which impresses the Flash to no end.

I really liked the electric Superman as well. It did look better in blue rather than red. Always thought that was a cool designed costume and it was an interesting power set they gave him, despite being a huge departure for the character.138 Scourge wrote:I have a feeling it isn't a bit of nineties comic trivia that is fondly remembered, but I liked the Electric Superman costume. The regeneration suit? I liked the look of that costume too.Shockwave wrote:And his "Metallica" black costume too. Or as I like to call it, the Metallica and Justice For All outfit.
