Mars Attacks

Ancillary, non-main-line stuff. Star Wars TF, Speed Stars, Titanium Series, Robot Heroes, that sort of thing. They're kinda neat, but we all know they're not really that important. Admit it, you know it's true.

Mars Attacks

Post by Dominic »

And, it seems that I was wrong. "Mars Attacks" will be crossing over with a number of IDW's books, including licenses like TF. Some of the crossovers are going to simply be odd cover variant. But, the TF crossover issue is billed as being written by McCarthy, which likely indicates that it is going to be a new story. And, because it is written by McCarthy, I am obligated to buy it.

Easy pass for me. I'm not a fan of cross-overs TF comics. coupled with I haven't bought a IDW TF comic since December 2011.

Actually, I could potentially see this turning out okay. First of all, crossing over with a property like Mars Attacks means there's a high chance the damn thing won't take itself so *seriously* (one of the first major faults of the original Infestation crossover, in my opinion), and we'll get a ridiculous over-the-top tale of Transformers beating back a characteristically ultraviolent Martian invasion. Plus, McCarthy's writing it, and I'm a big, big fan of that man's work (was not even aware he was still writing for IDW! Holy cats!).

Also, if this does well, maybe IDW's thing next year will be a Dinosaurs Attack event, and I will shamelessly admit that that's something I would love to see. The Dinobots getting quantum mind-fucked and going on bloody rampages with the other dinosaurs? The giant insects getting turned into new versions of the BW Predacons? Unicron vs. Dinosaur Satan? Come on, it would be amazing!

Serious or not, it will probably be terrible. (I am Shane McCarthy's bitch, and will buy it. But, I am not expecting anything great.)

Too often, "funny" comics mean "badly written and drawn" comics.

I think that this is McCarthy's first writing in a few years actually. I have not seen anything new from him since "All Hail Megatron".

Shockwave, you do not have to "take one" for the team here...because have already signed on to do that.

I'd rather have badly written and drawn comics that are 'funny' than badly written and drawn comics that are just 'bad'. At least there's some entertainment value in the former.

So, would you rather be trapped in the Warp for 1d10 turns...or read 'Heart of Darkness' again?

Bad comics are bad comics.

I would actually need to roll on the morale chart to figure out the choice. (I actually tried to reread "Heart of Darkness" again, and barely got through it. The problems were mostly in the execution.)

While I thought both "Hearts of Darkness" & "Choas" were Awful. I actually thought Hearts of darkness was a bit better in story/plot/ Characterization than the failed/awful Choas saga.

"Heart of Darkness" is a weird oddity.

It tied in explicitly with both the main TF book and the first "Infestation" event. Despite this, there were inconsistencies, (largely focusing on Galvatron's faction), and apparently capricious changes made to the setting, such as Gorlam Prime being a dead world....again. And, little of "Hearts of Darkness" really stuck. Abnett likely had editorial approval/direction from IDW. But, "Heart of Darkness" as a whole was inconsequential enough to be wholly irrelevant less than a year after it was published.

It was not all bad. But, it was bad enough.

The worst part is that it was the first time that a TF had an A-list writer since the early Machio/Shooter issues. (And, the early Marvel run had enough half-assery to keep it from being more than "passable" at best by any objective standard.) It coudl have put TF on the map as a credible book. Instead, it gave little reason for anybody to stay with the franchise as a whole, and gave little reason for Transfans to follow Abnett back to his own core work.
