Not to nitpick too much, but Green Lantern was totally in Superfriends. He and Sinestro being in there is the primary reason anyone at all has knowledge of his (rather comically portrayed) color-based weakness. "That dinosaur is yellow!"

Crap, I forgot to edit that before I posted. I looked it up and yeah, he was in it, but described as a guest starring character more than a main cast. I suppose it's probably like Weyoun or Gul Dukat on DS9. Sure, they were there for every episode but they weren't in the title credits.

I'm pretty sure he was in the titles at least a little bit, maybe some splash shots of the whole cast. If nothing else, Sinestro got top billing at the beginning of the intro when they're throwing the whole Legion of Doom at you.

And got a couple more responses:

Response 4: "5" "Are you guessing?" "Yes. Am I right?" "As far as I know" *she starts singing Spiderman theme*
Response 5: "I don't know" "Do you even know who the Green Lantern is?" "No. Is he from Marvel?" "DC"

So now we've got 4 responses where GL was confused for a Marvel character and at least 2 people who thought he was Spiderman.

This reminds me of the recently seen Voyager episode where Janeway finds out that the stories of her ancestor were inaccurate, particularly the scene where Chakotay comes in to give her the daily report: Janeway: "Let me guess: Captain Chakotay is in his ready room, the holographic engineer is having technical difficulties and 7 of 12 is in her alcove regenerating."

This is the best social experiment ever. I'm tempted to try it on my co-workers now.

I thought we were establishing Green Lantern isn't a second tier super hero here, that people have at least heard of the character, not that people know how many human Green Lanterns there have been... But since this topic has come up, I've been a bit curious about just how many human Green Lanterns have been chosen from Earth for whatever reason. And there are a lot actually.

Of course the main 5 the comics have been based around... Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner

Oh, and there is a new guy. soon to be introduced. Who has a gun for some reason...

And then there are these characters...

Waverly Sayre (a Green Lantern sometime during the 1800's)
Daniel Young (temporary replacement for an injured Abin Sur in 1873)
Donna Parker (in the 1950's due to the Guardians concerns humanity could start a nuclear war and destroy itself, they chose her to defend just Earth, but she declined)
Charlie Vicker (forced Hal to let him help pursue a group of Qwardians that killed his brother. The Guardians allow him to remain with the Corps and to assign him to Sector 3319, he was depowered due to the destruction of the Central Battery and later killed by Grayven)
Jennifer-Lynn Hayden aka Jade (given a spare ring by Kyle Rayner when her powers temporarily were gone)
Anya Savenlovich (selected by Kyle Rayner for his 'New Corps', which he later disbanded)
??? Vidar aka Universo (from the Legion of Super Heroes era, discharged for attempting to view the beginning of time)
Rond Vidar (Legion member, killed by Superboy Prime)
Earth-Man (declined and Mon-El accepted the ring)

I wont go into alternate universes but a couple I still feel is worth mentioning...
Kai-ro (Green Lantern in Batman Beyond)
Jong Li (from an Elseworlds title, the "Green Lantern: Dragon Lord" mini-series set in 660 China)

Hal's getting replaced in the main GL title again?

Maybe he won't go crazy and destroy reality this time. We can only hope.

I doubt Hal's being replaced... Although certainly it looks like another Green Lantern will be taking a prominent role in the book. And probably Justice League given the FCBD issue showed him involved with the Trinity War story they will be doing.

Does it matter? None of the people Shocktrek asked even knew who GL was. (Well, one guy thought he was Ben Affleck.)

People spend so much time worrying about whether a figure is "mint" or not that they never stop to consider other flavours.

And to keep the experiment going I asked the same question of my Dad last night. Did not even know there was a Green Lantern.

Personally, I love getting into these "recognizability" debates because it gives me an excuse to talk to non geeks about geek stuff.
