Movies are awesome

Most of my jobs have dealt with customer service and I was trained to be a teacher, so of course I work with the public. And seriously, who hasn't at least seen Star Wars? I know people who hate anything science fiction related, but still enjoyed the Star Wars films. And they know enough about it to know Jedi and Sith are women.

Man, all I heard from people when 'Revenge of the Sith' was coming out was 'What's a Sith?'. No one knows, or even cares, about any of the crap like that from these movies. I don't know what constitutes 'average' in your circles, but honestly, your average person going into the theater for one of these is FAR more interested in making out during the movie than paying attention to any of the dialogue.

I think you'd be surprised in the range of Star Wars fans. One does not have to be a nerd to read the Star Wars novels. And again, there is a lot more Star Wars media out there than just the novels.

My girlfriend hadn't seen any of the series besides parts of Episode 3 at a friend's house until after we started dating. (I said, "This will not do!" and promptly crash coursed her.)

An action movie isn't generally the ideal movie to make out at.

I don't really know what the point of the argument here is, but I'll just wheigh in with my reality: I have geek friends and I have non geek friends. For example, most of my Masonics affiliations (in this case, we'll say my Eastern Star chapter) are made up of older folks that are non geeks. Now, if I were to stand up in one of our Eastern Star meetings and ask them if a Jedi or a Sith are females they're going to ask what the hell a sith or a Jedi is and then probably confuse it for Star Trek. And then tell me to sit back down and shut the fuck up.

And another example. I was working with a guy one time. Nice guy, HUGE football fan. Well I was helping him out with something one time and made a referrence to Chewbacca. He said "What's a Chewbacca?" Me: "... Seriously?" "I don't know what you just said" "Chewbacca. The Wookie? From Star Wars?" "What's Star Wars?"
My head exploded at that point. I think I made it a point not to talk to him anymore. Now, that's an extreme example. I think most people (even the fine folks in my Eastern Star chapter) would be familiar enough with American cinema to know that I was making a movie referrence, even if they haven't seen the movie or even confused it for another movie. But this fucker didn't even know that!

I think the point we're all trying to make Sparky, is that these people are out there. They exist. It's a reality and unfortunately they make up the majority of our society. And if they hear referrence to Star Wars, they're going to think about the movies (cinema) and not all the books and extra shit that's out there. The movies are a staple of iconic American Cinema. The books and other media are not. That's the point Gomess was trying to make. That this majority of society (the ones we meet when we step outside our usual geek filled circles) represents the "social consiousness" and the other media isn't as popular among that as the movies.

Now, I would actually go one step further and say that the extra media is not as popular even among our usual geek filled circles. I watch the movies but have not read hardly any of the books or comics. Yeah, I have seen images of female Siths but would be hard pressed to name any of them cause they weren't in the movies.

No, it's not. Typing in all capital letters with random pictures isn't going change that. To the common movie-goer, a super hero is a super hero. They probably aren't going to care which publisher the character belongs to. That'd be more like Paramount and 20th Century Fox is for Star Trek and Star Wars. But the average movie goer is going to know the difference between Spider-Man and Batman. The names alone give you an indication of how they are different. Similarly, while Star Trek and Star Wars are in the same vein of genre, they are very different types of movies.

I'll admit to being an optimist, while most people on this board seem to be more on the pessimist side. The truth most often lies in the middle.
