Kind of like the black Suburbans that Sector 7 had in the first live action movie. That was him. He was a super-paranoid guy who liked to make sure everything was in order. By-the-book to a fault. I forget what we named him though.

I think if you're just going to throw out names they ought to have meaning, you know?
Wow, that's weird because that's kinda what I had in mind for him. Best name I could come up with yesterday was Punchout, but maybe Nightwatch would work better for that? Did you guys actually come up with a name for him?

And Dom, I would argue that Black Ironhide does not necessarily need to be Ironhide. So far the only official context where he's been black and Ironhide is the movies and I wouldn't necessarily transpose that onto the Diaclone one.

Takara made the decision, not me.

The most differentiation it gets as a character is that the Fan Club uses this colour scheme for "Shattered Glass" Ironhide.

Yeah, I knew about that, but I meant in an official fiction context.

Takara and the Fan Club are both official. There is no getting around that.

Shattered Glass Ironhide uses that colour scheme on the TFU(?) mould.

Shattered Glass is full of stupid shit like that though. And in my opinion, it's no more official than you or my shit just because someone gave M. Sipher, Walky and his buddies a license to make things official.

People spend so much time worrying about whether a figure is "mint" or not that they never stop to consider other flavours.

Ever had a deja vu, Joel?

What? Huh?

(Seriously though, the "debate" about whether Walky and Sipher's officially licensed stuff is canon just puts a whole new perspective on the nature of canon itself. Perhaps O6 would agree with me that creators of official material for a 30 year-old franchise need to earn their stripes before their fanfic can be called "official".)

Yeah, but you do not get a say in this. Hasbro gave it the okay. It is official.

Is it good? No. Most of the Fan Club and BotCon comics (and text stories) are crap. The premises are basic, usually not rising above the level of fanfic even before being written, and the execution rarely helps.

But, official=/=good.

It is official. There is no way around that.

"Earn their stripes"?

It is not based on seniority. Walky and Sipher and the other fan-hacks do not have to earn out respect. They had to get noticed by the right people at Hasbro, and get their stuff published in official publications. Their stuff is low quality, but it is not fanfic.

Dom
-by definition, official is not fanfic.

Yeah, they do. Because we can just ignore the stuff they make, as the majority of us are. Stick to dictionary definitions all you like, the simple fact is that the people who use words are the ones that define them. Fanhack 'official' stuff doesn't cross our minds when we're thinking about the grand TF canon, and that as good as makes them non-canon. Cease your literalism!

LOADS of TF fans think Bay's movies suck, but still accept them as canon. Now why is that? Exposure, right? In the grand scheme of things, no one's heard of Walky and Sipher. I have a couple of friends who consider themselves TF fans because, like me, they grew up on G1/BW and caught the new movies, but I can guarantee they don't know these guys. Because of that, these fanhacks' works will be ultimately forgotten in the fandom's canonical hive-mind.

Or are we just arguing semantics, in the great TFViews tradition? =3

...I think the main difference in our perspectives, Dom, is that I respect the fans' opinions more than the copyright holders' rules. I'm a nut.
