Headmasters discussion

The originals... ok, not exactly, but the original named "The TransFormers" anyway. Take THAT, Diaclone!
Generation 1, Generation 2 - Removable fists? Check. Unlicensed vehicle modes? Check. Kickass tape deck robot with transforming cassette minions? DOUBLE CHECK!!!

Optimus Prime isn't in Masterforce. Heck, even Convoy isn't.

A human guy named Ginrai finds a Transtector (mindless, controllable TF) which greatly resembles Optimus Prime and uses it to fight the bad guys. Simple as.

Ah. Well then if Shout Factory follows the pattern from HM, then they should call him Ginrai. The Headmasters are very clearly shown to be the heads while the larger robots are just useable bodies and the translations reflect that. So really the main concern here would be are they going to call him Ginrai or Hi-Q?

Well, Hi-Q *is* a believable name for a 19 year-old Japanese big-brother type.

Srsly, it will be awesome if they do that. And call Minerva "Muzzle".

Yeah. I have faith in Shout Factory, they know if they tried to call Ginrai "Optimus Prime" people like me would throw a fit.

People spend so much time worrying about whether a figure is "mint" or not that they never stop to consider other flavours.

And please note I'm not the raging JP fanboy some know me as. I'm just being objective; calling Ginrai "Optimus Prime" or "Hi-Q" would be nuts. Almost more nuts than calling Metroplex "Philip".

Anyway, Headmasters! Get onto Cybertron's destruction. That's the final nail in the anything-to-do-with-the-American-series coffin. =|

Hi-Q wouldn't bother me as long as it's clear that he's a seperate character and NOT Optimus Prime. In fact, given that's what they called that component of him over here it would kinda make sense as they seem to be using US names whenever possible.

But

he's a Japanese trucker

...Admittedly, I don't know many, but "Hi-Q" wouldn't be high up on my list of callsigns.

And besides, the larger transforming bodies in Masterforce don't have their own personalities, so "Powermaster Optimus Prime" would *also* have to be referred to as Hi-Q. Unless the subbers come up with some contrived reason why the characters should assume new codenames when they combine with their Transtectors.

...And then we get to the point where the subbers are changing so much that it just becomes intrusive and insulting to the original property. =[

Aw man, the series has been out since 1987, you gotta forgive me for that one. I'll be more careful from now on though.

No problem. :) I guess I have had plenty of time to learn about major plot points, but I never have. And now that I'm finally watching the series for the first time, I'm hoping to be surprised most of the time.
