It is just kind of...ya know...weird that Archie Comics, which in '06 made a point of saying (in a subtle jab at the big 2), that their comics were something you could give to kid, is promotinig a sing who (in her own words) writes songs "about cock".

Re: Comics are awesome.
Lady Gaga is, believe it or not, popular. And she's not even that bad of a person--I'm only semi-fond of the music itself but the lady goes out of her way to promote the whole GLBT thing. It's a message I can get behind.
Re: Comics are awesome.
I have nothing against Lady Gaga. I do not know her as a person nor anything about her to make me dislike her. She needs to keep her celebrity arse out of politics. But, if influencing the system were hague worthy, there are plenty of people I am actively favorable to who would be facing the gallows.
Her music is an interesting challenge for me as her lyrics tend to be so profane that I cannot make them worse. (Honey Bear will tell you that filthing up lyrics is a hobby of mine.) And, that is kind of why I am suprised that Archie (whose marketing hinges on them being family friendly) is promoting cock-singing Lady Gaga.
And, since we are talking about Lady Gaga in the comic thread....

Linkara's reviews are not necessarily the most helpful. (He often ignores stylistic decisions by the writers and artists, not giving them enough credit on things that are likely intended to be artful.) But, he has some genuinely funny moments.
This is his review of the comic previewed on FCBD 2010. While I do not think it is as bad as Linkara paints it to be, (the point is that the main character is creepy), his reactio to the dream sequence is priceless.

What's your problem with cock, Dom?
Kids need to learn about cock.
And, as I implied, "respected" role models have said and done plenty worse things than Lady Gaga has talked about. Michael Jackson? No? Lady Gaga is nowhere near Marvel and DC's level when it comes to irresponsible representations of sex. Not to mention violence and sexism.
And Linkara can piss up a rope. "I'm a feminist, so here's my stereotypical nagging housewife voice for every woman from Bimbos in Time to Xena. Also twenty minutes of self-indulgent 'story' about me saving the world to pad things out. And an MST3K clip."

Trust Gomess to make me defend a guy affiliated with Willis....
There is a difference between making fun of a stereotype character and endorsing it. I am sure that much of Linkara's feminism is a marketing tool. But, I have not seen evidence that he is in fact a sexist.
And yeah, the kayfabe story elements are a bit over-blown.

-piss up a rope? Well, uh, I guess that sounds bad.

Xena: Warrior Princess? Worthy of nagging housewife voice? Really? Hell, she did as much for LGBT back in the day as Gaga does now. You'd figure she would be Linkara's type.Dominic wrote:There is a difference between making fun of a stereotype character and endorsing it.

Not having see the episode you are talking about, I have to ask if the comic he was reviewing was bad or not. If the comic was bad, and presented Xena as a naging housewife, then the housewife voice would be mocking the bad writing of the comic, not saying that Xena was in fact a housewife.
Re: Comics are awesome.
Dude, it doesn't even bare that much analysis. He does that voice for every goddamn woman. Including Big Barda while she's being forced to do porno in a story that's clearly meant (meant; failed) to be a serious indictment of misogyny. Sure, he's not what most people would call "actively" sexist, but I don't believe in a sliding scale. Don't claim to be a feminist every other week and then go around giving strong female characters offensive voices just because you don't like the comic they're in.
And don't tell me I'm bean counting, we've been over that one. =p

I do not think this is bean counting. But, I think you are accusing Linkara of the wrong offense.
From what you are saying, it sounds like Linkara was jumping on the (over-crowded) "John Byrne is a sexist" bandwagon. (People who accuse Byrne of sexism conventiently ignore large chunks of his work, including an amazing run on "Sensational She Hulk".)
If Linkara was calling out Byrne for bad writing, (either in the sense of mis-handling female characters or just plain bad writing), making fun of the character would be fair. Along similar lines, I am not a fan of "Identity Crisis" because it reduced Sue Dibny to being a worthless female character. But, if I make fun of "Identity Crisis" for this, I am not endorsing the ruining of Sue Dibny or the use of worthless female characters so much as I would be calling out Meltzer for doing that.

-was Linkara even jumping the Byrne Bashing Bandwagon?
