Universe Legends Warpath and Cosmos

The modern comics universe has had such a different take on G1, one that's significantly represented by the Generations toys, so they share a forum. A modern take on a Real Cybertronian Hero. Currently starring Generations toys, IDW "The Transformers" comics, MTMTE, TF vs GI Joe, and Windblade. Oh wait, and now Skybound, wheee!

Universe Legends Warpath and Cosmos

Post by andersonh1 »

Dom sent me these last week. I love collecting the updated G1 figures, and I wanted to do a review + comparison of the old and new versions.

Cosmos

Cosmos is a G1 mini-bot, so the Legends size class is an appropriate size for an updated figure. The original is a green flying saucer with a red 'siren' light on the top and a raised midsection. The Universe version is flatter with a tail fin and silver script, but it's clearly meant to be the same vehicle. It's the only green disk in the Autobot air force. :D

The transformation is different of course. The Universe version of Cosmos makes use of ball joints and hollow lower legs to give us a taller figure than the original, with better articulation. The point at which the waist connects with the torso is a weak spot though, which needed to peg into place better. Every time I try to pose the legs, it comes loose. The sculpting and paint are a bit better on the newer version as well.

Warpath

Warpath isn't quite as good when it comes to updates. While the robot mode is a lot better than the original, the vehicle is not nearly as good. I've always considered the H-tank transformers to be a "cheat", since no such tank exists as far as I know, and it makes it way too easy to make the H-parts arms and legs. It's not a bad looking tank though. The turret doesn't rotate, as it does on the original Warpath, but it does elevate.

The robot mode is a huge improvement over the original. Proportions are better, there's more articulation, and the legs and feet aren't fused. And as a bonus, the gun barrel can be pushed back into the chest so it's less obtrusive. This is where the redesigned Warpath is really worth the purchase.

Overall: both of these are well worth tracking down. Warpath is a little weaker in vehicle mode, but the robot mode is a vast improvement on the original G1 figure. Cosmos is a nice update as well. Thanks to Dom for selling me both during his collection-thinning.

My opinion is inverted. I like new Warpath better than the original, but prefer the old Cosmos. (A couple of extra joints in the arms, to let the "arms" come out of the "shell" would improve the figure immensely.)

Either way, they are both good figures.

Dom
-happy with the Japanese.

What kind of differences do the Japanese versions have from the US versions?

The differences are coloring. Warpath is a bit darker, with a red Autobot sigil (rather than the black sigil the US toy has). Cosmos has a bit more paint.

Movie style sigils on TFU style figures is a peeve of mine. (PCC figures, which mix sigils, make me buggy in this regard.)

Yeah, I prefer the proper color as well.

I just try to use the sigils to keep straight what lines the toys go in. I plan to write more about this when I review Jazz.
